The Pittsburgh Pirates (13-19) take on the Cincinnati Reds (9-24) on Saturday night at 6:35 PM in game three of a four-game series at PNC Park. The Pirates are sending out Zach Thompson (1-3, 7.08) for his sixth start of the season. He has a 1.77 WHIP in 20.1 innings. The Reds are countering with right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo (0-0, 5.79), who is making his second start of the season. He made his season debut five days ago and allowed three runs in 4.2 innings.
Beau Sulser was claimed on waivers.

I just got done watching clay Holmes pitch.
Man is he good. The Yankees announcers were saying he is pitching like the best relief pitcher in baseball this year and it looked like it today.
I really wish we had him. He and bednar would be so good at the end of games.
Bad teams don’t normally carry good relievers, they get traded close to 100%. Bednar might stay since he’s a local guy.
If he continues to pitch like this into the break he’s going to a playoff team.
Gotta love the Martian.
raise it!
Vogey said it best, winning is fun and if for just one night it makes me forget about all the crap I was bitching about before and during the game, lol.
as they say…winning cures all!
Just Win Baby.
Make me proud Man from Mars!
So league OPS is down an amazing 45 points to 685 so far in 2022. Amazingly the Pirates only have three players in today’s lineup above that number… And Reynolds is also below that number slightly.
What pirate you wanna push off the ship first: Yoshi, VanMeter or Knapp? It is painful to watch them in the lineup. I didn’t include Castillo because I think he is an actual prospect and has actually hit well at points the last two years.
Not sold on Thompson yet, but he’s been better as of late
He’s a good innings eater and a good back of the rotation SPer. Shame he’s wasted on a team with no front end starters
Hopefully we’re starting to see that now, considering his first few starts he barely made it out of the first inning haha
Yoshi gets the under .200 calls on the corner. If he was hitting .100 points higher he might get a call or two.
Q: The place where HR’s go to die?
A: Left Field at PNC Park

miss Lanny
Here goes shelton over thinking crap again!
I’m ok with this. Very positive outing for Thompson and he’s in position to get the ‘W”. Keeping him from a third time through the lineup is probably the right choice IMO.
wut
He should have already had it set up to pull him if he didn’t have a clean inning. But he had to send Oscar out to buy time. Pham just missed making it a 3-2 game when you could see Thompson was out of gas when he was walking around the mound after the two out single. His over thinking was giving Thompson one more batter.
Well gotta give credit to BC on vogelbach signing. Looking like an absolute bargain for next year too at $1.5 M. Hayes and Reynolds locked up, so that’s 3 returnees. 23 more.
Starting to wonder if Reynolds was a one-year wonder. I sincerely hope not.
He was great in 2019 too. 4th in ROY voting.
Personally no worries. He’s been too good of a hitter at every level.
I like Vogie and I hope he stays. Seems like he could become a fan favorite. However, I suspect he could be a trade deadline chip.
I’m afraid he will because the only thing he seems to be able to do well and get praise for is trading valuable players for high-upside prospects far from the majors. We’ll get another Eddy Yean or Kyle Nicolas for him, which isn’t all bad but at some point like, say, 2023, we need him to prioritize the major league team.
Agree. Voges could have a lot of value to a contender, but all they’ll get is some more UT guys to get blocked by the next Riddle/EGon/VanMeter. Voges is worth more trying to get the offense up to, maybe, just second- or even third-worst in the league.
With the DH in the NL now playoff teams are going to be interested if they have a hole in their batting order.
Thompson has been So Bitter for the Reds tonight.
What doesn’t Chavis play 2B? Many (All) the innings and ABs wasted on Vanmeter at 2B could’ve gone to Chavis. Maybe the Pirates see something in Vanmeter… I don’t.
you want Vanmeter at first base instead?
No. I want him on the bench. Yoshi and Vogie get most of the playing time there.
Chavis is a good 1B though.
Vanmeter = JT Riddle.
thompson seems to be throwing his cutter more….seeing as how that’s all i heard of when the pirates first acquired him, i’m surprised it took him this long to throw it this much.
good at bat by suwinski, despite not getting a hit
I like Jack. I hope he sticks in the bigs. The Pirates must like his defense giving him the start in CF tonight.
we need to bat Suwinksi behind Vogellbach in the lineup so we can have Greg Brown give it a “back to back Vogelbach Jack”
you know that man wants to scream it with all his might
that big man looks like he is swinging a golf club
Hate to see that, looks like a 7 day concussion deal. That was like an uppercut in a boxing match.
Here we go, Zach is being Zach again.
Two very strong starts in a row for Zach.
pirates trades post marte have been iffy at best
Stallings trade suddenly looking real good. It has gone from “interesting” to “money”.
how so?
Tonight’s starter. Duh. Plus two promising kids Nicholas and Scott.
did you miss thompson’s past starts??
and nicholas and scott are off to decent starts at least. but we’ll see about them
Yeah I said it’s “suddenly” improved. We got 4.5 months left if Thompson can be that 3.00 era guy he was last year…….then we’ve EASILY won this trade with several more dividends coming.
i don’t know how to feel with this positivity from you!
Well really Stallings value peaked last year. This was a good trade by BC on paper……and shouldn’t be hard to win this trade over the next few years.
on paper yes i think it’s a win. i hope it turns out well for the pirates
Two strong outings from Thompson. Nicolas with a 1.01 WHIP at Altoona.
And the 2020 draft is pretty uninspiring. Jones is interesting but high risk. The rest?
not looking good so far indeed. we’ll see tho
replicating reclamation starting pitchers like Burnett, Liriano, Happ, Cantina is the only path to success for this team
messing around with these rookies to acclimate themselves is never going to work
Good to see Castro and Castillo come through. Any more hits, though, and they’ll be back in Indy.
could at least one of them play second base?
want to see Mitchell called up
We don’t play second basemen at second base. They have to get stretched out.
what do you think about Kendall hired today?
He should be good for teaching the players not to get down about losing all the time.
or how to win with one foot tied behind your back
Shelton sporting a pair of glasses……maybe now he can see who he has playing RF. And 2B. And 1B.
I was thinking it was to look smart after putting this lineup out but I like your take better, lol.
Yeah trying to emulate his idol Joe Madden.
That was the first red flag for me on Shelton. Anyone who idolizes a manager who instructed his players to take out a key player on a rival (Kang in 2015; note that they went after him on the play prior to the one he was injured on–it was a strategy).
But hey, Maddon is showing that if you give him the two best players in baseball, 2-3 of the best rookies, one of the best closers, and a few other key pieces, he can win!
I’ll have to revisit the Kang injury……don’t remember Maddon being accused of that. Your source?
On the play before Coughlan took out Kang, the runner also went out of the basepath. Both plays looked dirty, and so I attribute it to a team-wide strategy just as I blamed Dusty Baker for Chapman head-hunting Cutch.
To make matters worse, despite Kang leaving with a career-threatening injury that took him out for the playoffs, Maddon made his infamous plantar fasciitis joke after the game. So back-to-back runners attempt to take out a star player and then you joke about it afterwards? Seems intentional.
At the very least, showing no remorse reveals Maddon’s character. Yet Shelton idolizes this guy?
Agree that his post game pressers are just all about him…….thanks for the refresher……i just don’t remember hearing Maddons takes but it’s been what, 8 years.
Yoshi’s due
the ball is so dead right now
We got rid of Moran and kept Tsutsugo? I guess Yoshi won the foot race so the Pirates kept him.
All the Pirates amount to is other teams 40 man roster rejects…
ALL IS WELL
at least suwinski, castro and castillo are all playing at the same time. all i really care about at this point lol
would like. to add Mason Martin, Mitchell and Oneil to that list
yes that would be nice!
WHAT was Shelton drinking?!
rumor mill heating up with a trade brewing
Krilloff sent to AAA to audition for the Bucs!
Mitch Keller’s hometown redemption is on the way
With his OPS over the last two years he would fit right in with this club. Unfortunately he would also be played at second base and shortstop. Seriously, Kellers upside is way better and I would not like this trade.
To paraphrase John Hiatt, you get the Sunday lineup on Saturday night.
Yikes! Shelton really rolled the dice on this one, lol.
He’s rolling dice, but the game is actually poker.
the real manager has arrived today to take this team to glory
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/05/pirates-to-hire-jason-kendall.html
Article says he’d be working with younger players but I wonder how much good he could really do them. I remember he used to say “see the ball hit the ball”. If he put no more thought into it than that, then what can he really teach? I suppose he could work with catchers. Forgetting his attitude for a minute, what kind of coach could he be in terms of teaching skills and knowledge? He never struck me as one that studied the game a lot.
Only heard bad things about Kendall in the clubhouse. Him and Giles were not really good dudes. Hope he’s matured. But assholes rarely do. Pardon my french.
I remember that being in the media some back then but I wonder how true it really was. I doubt any reporter would have the cojones to ask a direct question about it if he doesn’t end up getting hired.
As Leo Durocher said, nice guys finish last.
Maybe they’re grooming him.
hopefully ready by the allstar break
its about time we get rid of this schlep we currently have running the dugout
