The Pittsburgh Pirates (17-25) take on the Colorado Rockies (20-22) in the finale of a three-game series at PNC Park on Wednesday afternoon, starting at 12:35 PM. The Pirates are sending out Zach Thompson (2-4, 4.88) for his eighth start of the season. The Rockies are countering with right-hander Ryan Feltner (0-1, 7.20), who is making his second start of the season and fourth big league start.
Nick Mears has been assigned to Bradenton on rehab.
Pirates gave updates on some injured players today in Wednesday’s usual team update session.

Good to Connor Joe having success after the Pirates released him.
Tucupita being called up according to Mackey
What a slap on the face of Cruz! He’s the SS depth and people that are not SS are getting the call. Hope this motivates and not discourage him.
Castillo going back to AAA?
So that is what offense looks like. I like it!
I like this outfield.
They just need to forget Yoshi. This OF, and Gamel and Chavis at 1B & DH.
Work on getting a taker for Yoshi and then add Martin to be the lefty in the mix at 1B and DH. Will get easier as time goes and the remaining contract drops. Easier to eat part of the money.
I got it. He can pinch hit in the late innings of blowouts to face other teams’ position players. If he does that 10-20 times between now and the trade deadline, I’m SURE BC could get some napping AGM to bite.
You trade him for nothing and it’s an even trade
LOL!
This is when rebuilding gets fun.
So, the new offensive philosophy is to hit a 3 run homers? I like it, just wish it was a little more frequent.
Baseball heaven is 10-pitch innings when you’re in the field and 3-run bombs when you’re at bat.
These games are a lot more fun having these young upside guys playing.
Yerry’s first K didn’t take long.
see how fun games can be when the prospects are up and doing well
100%
Mitchell must be so excited to have broken in with a few hits and now heading home as a major leaguer. Real happy for him!
Now his first two HR at home!
Happy he has started strong. I have been looking forward to seeing him up here. Next should be Cruz and Martin
Me watching Yerry:
Now you can sleep tonight 🙂
I slept so good
Cool stuff! Had peeked in at down 0-4, thought “Great 🙁 ” Just checked back in….
PLAY THE KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MORE OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!
AND spend some money to supplement areas of need.
Van Meter…..2nd 3 run jack in the same game…..Sign of the Apocalypse??
Or they finally fixed the broken humidor.
Whew…..can relax over who is going to close now…..right
Vanmeter puts us up 4 and you still bring in Crowe instead of Yerry?
Day off tomorrow, Crowe needed some work. Besides, they wanted to test the kid with the likes of Blackmon and Cron 🙂
That happened fast, gotta go with whoever was warming up. BTW, why do we not hear from Block who’s up in the pen….? Big secret or that he thinks we can all see the pen?
Yerry and Crowe were warming up at the same time. They showed the pen, with both.
Ok missed that…..my bad
All good. I was actually writing a comment at the time thanking Vanmeter for the 3-run jack to bring Yerry in, assuming 4-run lead would be more than enough. Figured Crowe was for a close lead or tied game. Then saw Crowe on bump.
Pitching the 9th. If they are able to find the keys to the OMC.
Seems like a perfect time to have brought him in.
Giving him the 9th is better though.
Didn’t see this game playing out this way after how it started
OMG is…is VanMeter actually kinda almost good?!? I’m actually starting to like this guy.
Probably not. But compared to what they’ve been throwing out there regularly over these past couple seasons, yes.
Is there room on the VanMeter bandwagon?
You have to ask PiratePrimate, he has been a the lone passenger…… until now!
BRING IN YERRY YOU COWARDS!!!!!
Can’t believe it…. Can’t remember the last time there was a 3 run Jack for the Bucs!
The best play in baseball! ….Earl Weaver.
A Jack Jack!
SUWINSKI!!!!!!
Looked back at statcast. They have Jack at 84 sprint speed, 82 OF jump, 63 OAA and 60 avg. exit velo. I like where this is headed.
That was a great AB!
He’s earned a spot. Greg Allen may just be SOL.
I think Keller is throwing a two seamer, GameDay keeps calling it a change (94-96mph). Regardless, it has good glove side movement and sink. Been asking for him to switch to that for a while since his four seamer is garbage.
We used to have a pitcher named Neverauskas. Great arm. But always hit hard. I see so much similarity with Keller.
Except that Keller isn’t get hit hard
Friendly reminder that the same was true for Glasnow and Holmes. I feel like if we gave up on Keller, he’d succeed elsewhere.
My thought was on the FB that both Never and Keller throw. Both are flat and easy to hit.
Glasnow and Keller should not be lump together. Glasnow had a plus to plus fastball and slider, but little command and they were trying to force him to be a sinker guy. Once he’s command improve and was allow to pitch to his strength he flourished. Keller doesn’t have any plus pitches and poor command, if his command improves he will still be a back end starter.
None of them should be lumped together other than they have good arms and we lack having enough good arms to give up on the few we have.
I’d much prefer we keep trying to find coaches that can help.
Same with Holmes too. Has so much more to offer than Keller.
Another reason to like VanMeter; he turns the DP very well. That wasn’t as easy as it looked. That was a slow hopper that Hayes and VanMeter turned in less than 3.9 seconds
The second DP he’s looked very good on.
Oh good, Busty McProspect is in.
Even when we drive in runs it is often ugly.
I’m with the catcher, how is that a Home Run, ball was inches from the ground.
Hopefully we’ll see that with Cruz.
Hmmmm, this power thing? Do we have anybody in AAA who can do that?
All I know about Feltner is that FG has a 40 FV on him but he’s looked good so far. Part of that is likely due to our batters, who don’t seem to have much of a plan, unlike the Rockies’ batters.
Gamel piling up the Ks, streaky guy!
A reminder that I may have been a bit premature in wanting him extended as a 4th OF.
He is a good 4th OF. He just is not that great as a starter. For the Pirates Marisnak is the 4th OF, and Gamel starts.
Yeah he’d be fine as a 4th OF but probably not so good that I’d make a point of keeping him when we have the other OF options we have (being optimistic about Suwinski, Mitchell, Swaggerty, Bae, etc.).
I’ve never done that!
When they keep taking your cutter to RF you need to change things up, cutters that are pulled are easy roll out to SS, but once they start hitting it the other way is time for a change. Hope he goes sinker heavy on the 3rd inning.
Yeah, Block and Walker seemed to attribute the hits to RF as lucky due to the soft contact but it seemed to me they were more due to being a part of an approach.
It’s two games since the last blowout, so they’re due today. At least Yerry should get to leave the closet.
4 runs is a blow out, especially if Keller pitches today.
Shit he’s warming up.
Drew Thompson can’t see the plate because his eyebrows are in the way.
3 out of every 4 games we are behind, often it is in the 1st inning. Ridiculous.
Ever notice that the Pirates have not adopted that pitchers don’t hit anymore…..every game, that 9th spot in the lineup is basically a pitcher hitting.
Is it my imagination or do we finally have an outfield worth watching?
It’s all one big tryout camp and VanMeter caught their eye. I assume Cherington and Shelton agree on the extended look or either VanMeter or Shelton would already be gone. Ride with and hope VanMeter figures it out. He’s on a three game hit streak.
I agree that it should be “one big tryout”, all the more reason to play guys like Chavis and Castillo every day to give them an extended look to see what you have out of them going forward. They’re both still young, but both on the 40 man and would most likely get the axe to make room for new bodies at the end of the year anyway.
I guess my frustration is even if VanMeter turns into Neil Walker in his prime, best case scenario he’s going to get flipped at the deadline. Same with Yoshi.
I love Castillo and that hot streak in Spring Training was intriguing but I can see their interest in VanMeter. It’s not that big a deal if he gets 150-200 AB’s to solidify a spot in the bigs or spend the rest of his career in AAA. I’d rather see Castillo but I’m curious about VanMeter, too. And I’m rooting for him. He’s trying to hang on. I’ve seen guys at his age figure it out and have productivity careers.
That hot streak in Sat might have derailed him a bit. He’s not a home run guy, needs to get back to line drive from post to post.
Meant to read ST for spring training, auto corrected to Sat!!,.?…
This week Ke’Bryan Hayes will likely play his 162nd game.
Currently, he’s playing like a future Hall of Famer with 6+ bWAR / 162

Tired of seeing VanMeter over Castillo.
One of the few to register a hit yesterday? Bench him
In reality Van Meter has hit righties better than Castillo by a .592 OPS to .464.
They like VanMeter and maybe their faith will be justified. But what’s frustrating is that if you believe Castillo is a decent prospect, then he needs to get starts against righties to help him develop.
I can see both sides of the argument but currently think Castillo has more potential so would prioritize him regardless of his sss ops.
