Both Altoona and Indianapolis have early start time today. Altoona goes first in the morning with Omar Cruz on the mound. Indianapolis has Roansy Contreras listed in their game notes and game recap, but the MiLB schedule says TBD, and the Pirates don’t have a starter named yet. I wrote him in anyway just in case. I’ll fill in Greensboro later. They have Jared Jones listed and it seems unlikely (sarcasm) that he would pitch on back-to-back days. Henry Davis was placed on the 7-day IL, but Jack Hartman will finally make his pro debut with Bradenton.

Game Recap:
Bradenton won 4-2 on Wednesday behind a strong pitching performance from Valentin Linarez, who allowed one unearned run on three hits, no walks and six strikeouts. He was named as our Bradenton Player of the Week recently for his start last week in which he threw five shutout innings on two hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. Wilkin Ramos took over in the sixth and allowed two runs while recording one out. Jake Sweeney gave up one unearned run in two innings to close out the game. He struck out four batters, giving him 20 strikeouts in 19.2 innings. Alexander Mojica had a single, double and a walk. Tsung-Che Cheng had a single, walk, run scored and his eighth steal. Juan Jerez had a single, RBI and his sixth steal. Sergio Campana stole his third base. Jase Bowen had two hits, a run and an RBI.
Biggest surprise- Sabol. He’s big and tearing it up. First base/catcher/DH prospects coming out of hte woodwork.
Biggest dissapoinment- Fraizer. I thought this guy was coming into his own. Can’t hit anything.
I hate to be “that guy”, John. But you say “Bradenton won 4-2…” then go on to correctly describe how their pitchers gave up four runs. And lost.
Admittedly, it’s a nitpicking. And I love the work you do here. Producing this page daily in as timely a manner as you do isn’t easy. Thanks.
Thanks for the update and the mention of Relievers Colin Selby at AA and Nick Dombkowski at A+, two kids who will be in the Pirate BP sometime in the future.
TWELVE!!! GORSKI IS NOW AT 12 HR’s!!!! HE HIT 17 ALL OF LAST SEASON!!! HE’S AT 12 ALREADY!!!!
Home ballpark?
That place must be a Home run haven.
8 of his 12 homers have come at home, and he does have a 1.345 home OPS to .783 on the road, so I would not get too excited, but still fun to see.
Mostly, yes, but he’s 24 and a road OPS of 783. K/BB numbers aren’t as great on the road, but again, he’s 24 and raking either way so promote him.
Gorski to Jacob Gonzalez after he wins POTW
PROMOTE GORSKI!!!! HE’S AT 11 DING DONG BIG BOMBS!!!!
Thoughts on promoting Gorski while demoting Frazier, as both are CF
make that 12! really no reason he should still be there lol
I would not promote him just yet. He is hitting .326 at home and .246 on the road, with 8 of his 12 home runs at home, so the park is probably playing a large role in his success.
It’s not like he’s batting 180 on the road, so I’d still do it even with the split differences.
i don’t think his road/home splits are that relevant. he had similar splits last season (though not as extreme). except now he’s repeating the level and has shown to be dominating it this time around.
so i don’t see what him staying at that level is going to do for him. like BnP said, he’s already 24. they need to see if these changes he made are legit, or just a product of him repeating the level.
Linarez working on his second consecutive strong start, after a really rough start to season.
Also just hit me that with the Indy game postponed, that was the last streamed game worth watching.
And Roberto Perez is out for the year. Good thing BC wasn’t stupid enough to be satisfied with a backup C who couldn’t hit more than .140. Oh . . . wait . . . .
lonnie white apparently has a ucl injury. so that’s fun
wow.
Figures. He’s gonna end up two years out from the draft with no pro experience.
that would suck. hopefully it’s something like bryce harper’s injury. he can dh…just can’t play the outfield
Hopefully that’s the case. I feel like out the 2021 class he’s the one that can least afford to miss time.
doesn’t sound too serious. phew

I don’t like the Tank news of going to Pittsburgh to be “Further examined”.
Don’t think we’re seeing Cederlind return any time soon.
Yeah, we won’t see Cederlind this year. Sounds like the TJ didn’t heal properly.
Nojinx nojinx nojinx
I did notice he was on the 7-day, not 60-day.
A.J. Graham, btw, is on the 60-day.
these injuries are killing me
Pitching injuries were always a thing. You can go to bbref and find an amazing number of Ps way back when, who were great for 2-3-4 years, threw a ton of innings, then fell off the map.
But all these obliques and hammies? Is it too much weight training? More bulk must increase stress. You see film from the days of Clemente, Blass, etc., they all look like beanpoles.
A result of being strongly encouraged to have poison injected into their blood stream
I recalled that bulking up was considered detrimental to players, flexibility was key. Lance Parrish used to stand out back in those days because he did lifted weights. Not saying that there were no big dudes, just saying that lifting weights was not encouraged.
I don’t wanna speak completely out of ignorance, but I know that’s why “lean” muscle is generally promoted over just generally “bulking”
The bulk up doesn’t help much. Bulking isn’t great for quick twitch movements that are generally expected of athletes. Perfect example was when Polanco got yoked prior to 2017 season, and then just kept getting injured. Coincidentally a nagging hamstring injury. Had a complete different workout plan following 2017 season, and was fine in 2018 up until, well, we all remember the slide.
Annnnd no Indy. Boo
Carlos Martinez is available…
The St Louis Cardinals of a decade ago are still carrying a lotta clout that their current developmental successes don’t really support…
It’d be funny if they signed him and dfa’d Beede.
Red Sox Release Carlos MartinezBy Steve Adams | May 18, 2022 at 8:39am CDT
Oh, and who IS Andres Alvarez?
I’m going to nickname him the Kraken, does damage when released!
Undercover Slugger for the Curves.
Weather delay for Indy…..😡
Nick G finally showing a pulse. Hoping he catches fire as the weather gets warmer
JC Flowers with a, if you blink you missed 9 pitch inning.
Single-digit-pitch innings, in my book, are on a par with 3-run HRs.
#FreeSabol.
all sabol does is hit!
I’m still mystified at how little attention he gets. Has nobody outside this site seen the #s?
I thought he might have a hard time grabbing attention if he was going to be in the OF/DH role, but once he got moved behind the plate and held his own, I thought he might start seeing some hype. Catching prospects isn’t as dire (league wide) as it was even a few season’s ago, but with turning 24 in January, that’s not really “old” for a catcher. Maybe if he starts gunning down more runners.
I’ve seen enough of him that I can’t see him as a plus defender. He IS a good athlete, though, so time may change things. If the bat holds up, he just has to be passable.
I think he would be a cracker jack designated hitter!
I don’t think he’ll be a plus defender. Enough that if he tightens up his game with balls in dirt, he should be passable. He has an arm, it’s just if it’s on target or not. Caught base stealers seems hard to really grade at this point too just because of all the rule changes. Even guys that are considered “plus defenders” are having trouble throwing out base stealers.
yes it is interesting. mlb doesn’t have him in the top 30. baseball america just redid their top 30 (which barely seems like they put any effort in….i think endy dropped one spot?), and sabol isn’t in that either. fangraphs has him at 57.
just a late blooming prospect i guess. perhaps alvarez is someone to keep an eye on too now
Who cares about the number, seems like FG got the scouting report pretty tight “His hands look like they’re loading a little lower, which may have helped unlock more in-game pop. It was lower-level performance, but Sabol hit more home runs in 2021 than he did his entire college career. Sabol’s put himself on the map as a developmental late-bloomer, and the catchers who break late tend to be big-framed guys like him.”
And he catches, he just gonna have to keep it up. If this power surge he’s currently on continuous he’s gonna force his way into some recognition.
A catcher who can hit? Bah, they grow on trees.
Especially left handed hitting catchers. BC’s trying to corner the market on those who can’t hit so Sabol may have trouble getting noticed. If you can hit you’ll end up costing too much money.
Would be cool if all 3 of Davis, Rodriguez and Sabol make it to the bigs on the same team as utility catchers!
It’d be even cooler if it happened before 2035.
My math is a bit shaky, but I think it might happen before that! If it happens at all!
Omar doesn’t seem to have it today.
He’s getting Kellered in this inning.
Kellered: when you allow hard contact to every batter you faced.
Someone call Websters. This needs to go in the dictionary!
Happy Ro Day Y’all!!!!
No one is announcing it yet, but the signs are pointing that way. It would be an odd start to call him up off of because he did not pitch well on Friday. However, this is the Pirates, so it starts to make sense. I figured he would at least go five innings once before coming back so I was expecting him back some time early next week
An announcement is planned for the third inning.
