Game Recap:

Greensboro (11-14) lost to hapless Asheville, 6-5, in game that was shortened by rain, ending with one out in the top of the seventh.  Nick Garcia followed what’s been a pattern for him, pitching very well for a limited time and then hitting a wall.  He retired the first six batters he faced, four on strikes, but managed to retire only two in the third.  He allowed two hits, three walks and four runs in the inning.  Nick Dombkowski, in his second game since a promotion from Bradenton, threw two and a third scoreless innings.  The Grasshoppers came back to tie the game, 4-4, but Jack Carey allowed two unearned runs in the top of the sixth and the Hoppers could come back with only one.  Greensboro had only four hits, but drew eight walks.  Yoyner Fajardo had half the hits and is now batting .357.  He also stole a base.  Dariel Lopez hit his fourth home run and Matt Gorski drew three walks.

LOW-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

Game Recap:

Bradenton (13-12) got off to a good start, leading 3-0 after an inning, but it was all downhill from there and Tampa won, 9-3.  Po-Yu Chen’s start was similar to Nick Garcia’s.  He had a quick first inning, then gave up a run in the second when Alexander Mojica got only one out on what should have been a double play.  He gave up three in the third, though, and left with two outs in the fourth.  Chen did strike out seven.  In fact, Marauders pitchers fanned 15 in all, but walked eight.  Yunior Thibo gave up a run and Wilkin Ramos, who hadn’t allowed an earned run in his first seven outings, gave up four run, two earned.  Cristian Charle finished with two scoreless innings, fanning four.  Bradenton had four hits in the first.  Brenden Dixon led off with his fourth home run of the year, then later on Jase Bowen, Jacob Gonzalez and Mike Jarvis hit consecutive doubles.  Gonzalez’ double was his tenth, which leads the league.  After the first, Bradenton managed just two singles, one each by Jarvis and Dixon.

Having followed the Pirates fanatically since 1965, Wilbur Miller is one of the fast-dwindling number of fans who’ve actually seen good Pirate teams. He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
