Pirates Recall Liover Peguero; Tucupita Marcano to IL

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates have called up 21-year-old shortstop prospect Liover Peguero from Altoona after Tucupita Marcano had to be placed on the COVID-19 Injured List. Peguero was the only player on the Altoona roster who is also on the 40-man roster, making it easy for the Pirates to get him from their home game in Altoona to PNC Park in time for tonight’s game.

Peguero isn’t in the starting lineup tonight and he might not be with the team long, but he gets a chance to get a taste of the big leagues. He’s hitting .292/.315/.469 in 54 games this season. Until this season, his only defensive experience was at shortstop, but he had made some starts at second base this year.

Marcano is hitting .262/.318/.410 in 19 games with the Pirates this season.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
