Game Recap:

Indianapolis (26-26) blew a four-run lead and lost to Omaha, 7-6.  The Indians relied on the longball for most of their offense.  Oneil Cruz led off the game with his eighth home run of the year.  He also had a single, to drag his OPS up to .744.  Bligh Madris also homered, his fifth, and had an RBI single.  Hoy Park accounted for the rest of the scoring with a three-run bomb, his second longball.  Indy went with a bullpen game, starting with Zach Matson, who gave up two runs in two innings.  Blake Weiman threw three scoreless innings and John O’Reilly gave up two runs in one inning.  Indy still held a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.  Hunter Stratton fanned three in that inning, but also got torched for three runs, putting Omaha ahead for good.

Game Recap:

Altoona (24-26) beat Bowie, 5-3.  Luis Ortiz had a great start until the very end.  He allowed just one hit and no walks until two were out in the sixth.  Then he walked two and gave up a two-run double.  Noe Toribio followed with two innings, giving up one run.  Tyler Samaniego, who’s starting to look like an Altoona version of David Bednar, came in to get the last four outs, fanning two.  In 20 innings between two levels, he’s allowed three hits and fanned 27.  The offense was mostly Blake Sabol.  He had a triple and his sixth home run, scored three times and drove in three.  Jared Triolo reached three times on a hit and two walks, and Matt Gorski had two hits, a walk and two RBIs.  He’s hitting .324 so far in AA, while Sabol is hitting .319.  Andres Alvarez was somehow held to just a double and Connor Scott had a triple.  Liover Peguero went hitless; he’s in an 0-for-13 rut right now.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

P2Daily: It’s Greensboro Grasshoppers and Matt Gorski Week on Pirates Prospects

Game Time: 6:30pm

Box Score

Starting Pitcher: Nick Garcia

  • Final Line: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER , 1 BB, 5 K

Notable Performances:

  • Dariel Lopez 1-3, 2B, BB
  • Abrahan Gutierrez 2-4, HR (4)
  • Endy Rodriguez 0-4

Game Recap:

Greensboro (21-28) lost to Wilmington, 5-2.  Nick Garcia had an excellent start, giving up just one run, on a solo homer, in five and a third innings.  He allowed four hits overall, along with two walks, and he fanned five.  The bullpen was less effective, as Jack Carey and Michell Miliano combined to allow four runs.  The offense didn’t do much, either.  In fact, apart from Abrahan Gutierrez, it did almost nothing.  Gutierrez drove in both runs, with a single and his fourth home run of the year.  The rest of the lineup had four hits and struck out a dozen times.  Dariel Lopez had a double and a walk.

Box Score Game Two

Starting Pitchers: Po-Yu Chen and Carlos Jimenez

  • Joe Jacques 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Game Recap:

Bradenton (22-28) won the first game of its doubleheader with Lakeland, 3-0.  Po-Yu Chen has struggled a lot this year, but when he’s on he can be very tough, and that was the case in this one.  He needed just 68 pitches to work five shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk, and fanning seven.  Joe Jacques started his rehab by getting the last six outs.  Jase Bowen led the offense with two hits and two RBIs.  Deivis Nadal continued to do well since moving up from extended spring training.  He had a single and a walk, stole two bases and scored twice.  Luke Brown had a single, walk and steal.

The Marauders lost the second game, 2-1.  Carlos Jimenez mostly pitched well, but he threw only 46 of 81 pitches for strikes.  He allowed two runs and only three hits.  The offense had five hits, two by Grant Koch, including a double, and drove in the only run.  Jase Bowen also doubled.  Rodolfo Nolasco had a rough day, striking out five times in six at-bats, including one automatic third strike on a pitch clock violation.

Having followed the Pirates fanatically since 1965, Wilbur Miller is one of the fast-dwindling number of fans who’ve actually seen good Pirate teams. He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
