It’s a typical Monday, so it’s just the three short-season teams today. All of the action gets underway by noon. We will fill in the starters once the games begin.

Starting Pitcher: Alessandro Ercolani (0-0, 1.74)
- Final Line:Â 3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO
Notable Performances:

Javier Rivas 0-for-5
Enmanuel Terrero 1-for-3, BB, SB
Solomon Maguire 0-for-4
Jesus Castillo 1-for-4, SB
Deion Walker 1-for-4, RBI
Game Recap:
Alessandro Ercolani made his fourth start on Monday and he worked around some base runners to allow just one run in three innings. He allowed four hits, three walks, hit two batters and struck out four batters. He now has a 2.03 ERA. Kevin Disla followed with two perfect innings. Jose Garces gave up one run over three frames, while striking out six batters. Carlos Campos threw shutout ball in the ninth, but he allowed two runs in the tenth (one unearned) for the 4-2 loss.
Maikol Escotto played his first game since being promoted to Greensboro weeks ago. He had two infield hits and reached on a HBP. He left after getting hit, though that could have been planned since it’s his first game since June 8th. After his single in the third, Escotto stole second, third and then had a straight steal of home. The other Pirates run scored on a Deion Walker single, his first RBI of the season. Pirates had six hits, all singles.

Starting Pitcher: Isaias Uribe (0-0, 5.19)
- Final Line:Â 0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO
Notable Performances:
Eduardo Oviedo 1-for-4, BB
Robert DePaula 0-for-4
Angel Rodriguez 1-for-4, 2B
Wesley Zapata 1-for-3, RBI
Game Recap:
This game started off bad with starter Isaias Uribe allowing four runs in the first before he was removed with two outs. It didn’t get any better, as that first inning was only the fourth worst inning for Pirates pitchers. Sparing you the pitching details, they lost 32-3 and 31 of the runs were earned.
Angel Rodriguez played his first game and collected a double, then scored on a wild pitch. Daje Morales hit his first homer in the fifth inning. Wesley Zapata singled in a run in the sixth. Morales also hit his third double. He was the only player with more than one hit.

Starting Pitcher: Andres Silvera (0-0, 0.00)
- Final Line:Â 5 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO
Notable Performances:
Ruben Vizcaya 1-for-4
Roinny Aguiar 1-for-3, 2B
Yordany De Los Santos 2-for-3, BB
Carlos Tirado 0-for-3, BB
John Zorrilla 0-for-3
Gustavo Armas 0-for-3
Axiel Plaz 2-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI
Eddy Rodriguez 0-for-2
Game Recap:
Andres Silvera made his fourth start and he gave up a run. That’s noteworthy because he threw shutout ball in his first three starts. This game was just as good though, with five innings, one hit, one run and one walk. He now has an 0.54 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 16.2 innings. Unless there’s a boxscore error (I’m checking on it), then Dioris Valdez made his mound debut and tossed a scoreless inning. He has off-the-charts raw power, but he was 0-for-6 with five strikeouts this year, so the move to the mound is possible. Jesus Clode finished out the game with three shutout innings of one-hit ball. Roinny Aguiar drove in the first run with his fourth double. Axiel Plaz then doubled in two runs. The double was his fifth and he also had a single. Yordany Del Los Santos had two singles and a walk.
Geez. Maybe, they, uh, should’ve only had 1 DSL team. 32-3?!?!
Holy crap what? Looks like the two guys who got smacked around are both already 20, dont know how much longer they will be in the org
John just brought up the fact there were a handful of ridiculous score games. Possibility they’re testing some new rules/changes?
Ok that would make more sense than us giving up 20 runs in two innings…
Garces looks really good. Blowing away most hitters. Good curve and much better command than the first time I saw him.
And similar to Silvera, Jose Garces has grown a lot since his signing
He’s now 6’4” 199
Somebody needs to tell this ump the game won’t end if nobody scores. Rivas just got rung up on a pitch two inches off the ground.
Maybe the ump has an angry wife at home so he’s trying to stay?
Escotto singles on pop up. Then steals all the bases lol
Straight steal of home.
Is it actually Ercolani pitching, or Christopher Cruz? lol
He wasn’t that bad. Tends to drive pitches too low. And this ump has a low zone.
That’s one aspect I was thinking on last year, while watching a bunch of games. It probably shouldn’t be weighed THAT heavily, but that sometimes the umps calling these games are just as raw as the players they’re umping. I feel there’d be times I’m watching a starter just paint the black pitch after pitch, but they’re walking everybody, or have to lay in a hanging breaker, cause the umps zone is so bad and they’re in a hitters count.
I was convinced the ump’s strike was a huge variable with Josh Fogg. It’d be more influential at this level.
Plaz is Pizazz.
Damn, he’s 16?!
Definitely doesnt seem to be overmatched to this point, despite his age!
Everyone he faces is overmatched.
my boi angel rodriguez has arrived! first hit is a double
aguiar = pirates altuve
Nice diving stop by Rivas. Really liking this guy.
Escotto leading off for FCL
Struck out on 3 pitches.
Anyone know what silvera’s stuff is like on dsl gold? Impressive numbers between last year and this year and still only 17
I don’t know much about Silvera except that he’s still 17 and has grown to 6’2” 210 according the 2022 media guide
Lots of promising signs for his future
Don’t know much about him, but I imagine he could get a move stateside with this kind of showing. Although, maybe not, as they only have the one FCL squad, a lot of bodies, and the draft around the corner. If last year was any indication, any drafted arm, at least prep or expected in FCL, may just go to back field training and not debut till 2023.
Wonder if next year will be a bump up to two FCL teams or if they will really continue to emphasize back field stuff long term. Also, unsure if this is unique to us or if other teams aroundd the league do similar things
Quoting Noah Wright at Rumbunter,
“With Polanco joining MLB Pipeline’s top 30 Pirates prospects, they now have nine total prospects who are primarily outfielders. That includes Matt Fraizer, Travis Swaggerty, Lonnie White Jr., Hudson Head, Canaan Smith-Njigba, Rodolfo Nolasco, Cal Mitchell, Connor Scott, and Matt Gorski.”
I see Reynolds being used to find top shelf pitching.
Yes, but we also have to ask ourselves, how many of those OFs project to actually replace the value lost by Reynolds in the OF?
Fraizer has warmed up a bit, but he hasn’t been near the meteoric rise player he was last year. That itself makes me cautiously optimistic about Gorski, emphasis on the cautious part.
Hudson is still very, very, very raw, and not having much success in Hi A.
Lonnie and Rodolfo are likely far enough away that Reynolds here for even another 2 years isn’t affected by them. Even if you want to throw in Shalin Polanco.
CSN/Cal/Scott all have aspects that likely limit their upside.
Swaggerty probably has the safest floor to replace it, to me. In large part that he’s the most likely capable of the bunch to stick in CF. Gorski would likely be second, but I still have my reservations on how this season’s production continues.
All this being said, I’m not totally against moving Reynolds for the right return.
I’ve seen the thought that Reynolds’ value needs to be replaced by the outfielder replacing his spot on the roster a few times and to me it’s inherently flawed logic. Just as an example let’s say Swaggerty gets called up to replace Reynolds and puts up 2 WAR next year, then the headliner in the trade return puts up 3 WAR and a secondary piece in the trade puts up 1.5 WAR. That would be 6.5 WAR accumulated by the internal replacement for Reynolds plus the acquisitions from the trade. That aggregate more than makes up for Reynolds’ departure in this theoretical scenario. Granted there’s a lot more variables and moving parts here, most notably how much of an increase do the guys acquired provide over the guys they are replacing on the roster. But this is my long winded way of saying that all of Reynolds’ production doesn’t have to be made up 1 for 1 by the guy taking his spot.
That’s a good example.
However, if Reynolds gets 5.0 WAR in 650 PAs and his replacements get 5.0 WAR in 1300 PAs that’s a pretty big downgrade
I am not sure that Reynold’s value can be replaced completely by anyone listed in the top 30 (much less other dark horses such as Blake Sabol or Endy Rodriguez) however pitching is a HUGE weakness, and I suspect it can best be addressed with a HUGE name….
Again, NOT that I’m against it (depending on return), but you potentially create a new, similar, hole by plugging another.
So, I guess it would mostly come down to the FO deciding and waging which path forward is their best option. Would likely be contingent on how confident they are in Ro, Burrows, and Priester.
I do think it’d be easier, per se, to build around a dominant staff.
It’ll be interesting to see what shakes out. Me? I’d rather extend Reynolds (again), but 11M as an incentive would be mighty attractive to a club that spends heavily. I also agree that a dominant rotation is more difficult to develop.
We have reynolds for 3 more years after this season, so I really do not see us moving on from him right now unless absolutely blown away by an offer. Also, most of that list projects to be AAAA players at best. Our offensive consistency and thus upside for next year is absolutely decimated if we move on from reynolds.
If he had just one year of control left after this season, I would be singing a different tune, but right now I just dont think that it makes sense
I think Philadelphia will come knocking VERY hard… Mick Abel, (I’d take Andrew Painter), Logan O’Hoppe and a couple lottery picks might make me very interested.
I don’t know that any of those guys are talented enough to be the headliner in a deal for reynolds that i would want. If they offer 2 or even 3 of those names, then BC would have to assess how quickly we are ready to take the next step. If he thinks next year is the year, then this trade would push them back. If he thinks our window opens a year later, then reynolds might just miss our timeline enough to consider a deal like this.
OTOH, if a team like miami came knocking with 2-3 of their top 5, then I am very interested.
I hope that you are right that we get an enormous overpay if reynolds were to be moved 🙂
I like Miami better – but an fractured thumb has (I believe) has ratcheted up Philadephia’s angst.
Good point, their need is undoubtedly increased as of yesterday!
Just realized I mis-placed/mis-started this post Sorry, all.
I’m terrible starting threads
