He went 3.2 innings on Opening Day, then tossed four scoreless frames today on three hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Patricio Ress followed with three runs over 1.2 innings. He pitched well during Spring Training, but he not performed up to those standards in either of his 2022 outings. Eliecer Romero recorded the final out of the sixth, stranding an inherited runner. He then threw shutout ball in the seventh to close out the 4-3 win. Roinny Aguiar, who signed for $315,000 in January, made his pro debut and went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. He was signed as a shortstop, but he was the DH today. Yordany De Los Santos had the big hit of the game, driving in two runs with his second double of the season. John Zorrilla hit his first home run. Gustavo Armas capped the scoring with a ground ball/error that brought in a runner from third base.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
