The Pittsburgh Pirates added pitcher Manny Banuelos to the active roster prior to Wednesday’s game against his old teammates. He was purchased by the Pirates on Sunday. They also activated pitcher Yerry De Los Santos from the COVID-19 IL. To make room on the 26-man roster, pitcher Cam Vieaux was optioned to Indianapolis, and pitcher Austin Brice was designated for assignment.
Banuelos has a 2.16 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP and eight strikeouts in 8.1 innings this season.
De Los Santos has a 2.84 ERA in 12.2 innings over 13 appearances, with an 0.95 WHIP and 13 strikeouts.
Brice pitched two games for the Pirates and allowed two runs over 3.2 innings.
Vieaux made five appearances, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on a 3.00 WHIP in five innings.
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball.
When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
It’s a good sign that Vieaux was just optioned and not DFA’d like Sulser or Alldred. Especially after they hung him out to dry against Milwaukee.
Vieaux will probably be the 27th man for the DH tomorrow then go to AAA. I mean…he’s already shown he can throw 56 pitches….
Give him the window seat, he earned it!
Yeury has some upside and can Banuelos be any worse than any of the other lefties we’ve trotted out there.
You dared to ask!
