Pirates Discussion: Pirates and Full Season Affiliates Return to Play

The Pittsburgh Pirates begin the second half of their season with the Miami Marlins visiting for a three game set, a week after the Pirates were in Miami.

Last matchup, the Marlins started three left-handers within the four games. This time around, they begin with Braxton Garrett — who gave the Pirates hitters a lot of trouble in the fourth game — before two scheduled right-handers. Top 100 Prospect Max Meyer is scheduled to take the mound on Saturday for his second career start, and then All-Star — and Pitcher-Who-Should-Have-Been-NL-SP — Sandy Alcantara is scheduled to take the mound Sunday.

The previous matchup involved a slew of baserunning blunders, defensive miscues, and a lack of offense from both clubs.

Congrats to delay. Everything else was fucking embarrassing

PirateRican21

Sorry I’m late, when do the Pirates start their second half?

buccobrach2

2 hits this game, different day, same old shit. Great start to the unofficial second half of the season guys.

Looking at the line up I dare to say they overachieved.

skliesen

One ugly display of baseball. Check that…Fugly display of baseball. 🤮

PiratePrimate

Suwinski 2 home runs tonight in St. Paul instead of Pittsburgh

1979andCounting

Second time in a week blocking the plate by Delay. The rule has been around for some 7 years. Is anyone teaching it down on the farm?

skliesen

The blocking the plate rule is the stupidest rule in sports. Even worse than what constitutes roughing the passer in Pro football.

Man I miss sports the way they were played in the 80’s.

docdon385

Rules that require the judgment of an official are always going to be problematic in any sport because judgment can always be disputed and argued.

skliesen

True, but how hard is it to determine if Catcher impeded runner from scoring by blocking the plate? In this case, Delay clearly did not.

Even worse, there’s no consistency to how it’s ruled on from one day to the next.

bucsws2014

Cherington has the vibrant personality of kale.

Timbertopper

Enough with the second base tryouts. Bring up Bae and park him there the rest of the season.

Wilbur Miller

Since those awful first four starts, Thompson’s been really good. ERA by month, including two IP today:

April: 10.05
May: 2.45
June: 2.51
July: 2.50

Yes jinx yes jinx yes jinx

skliesen

You should know by now to never say anything nice about a Pirates player until after the game is over.

1979andCounting

Deja vu, nothing new. Especially bad when it’s 3 – 5 in lineup striking out with two on, no outs.

skliesen

Any word on Reynolds?

Wilbur Miller

This season is f**ked any way. That’s one guy I’m not going to get impatient about.

skliesen

Guess the Pirates didn’t read Wilbur’s article from earlier this week about them failing to swing at strikes. Both Tsutsugo and Chavis watch strike 3 go by with men in scoring position.

SMH

Wilbur Miller

What exactly does Dumbo have against the cleanup spot? They have a .621 OPS out of that spot.

skliesen

The new Polanco.

skliesen

Looking forward to seeing Allen play.

Wilbur Miller

Only took a year longer than it should have.

1979andCounting

Just for you, He’ll clear and will be back with Pirates after someone gets dinged. Just can’t get rid of him!

bucsws2014

Vogelbach to Mets for Colin Holderman, 26 y.o. RH reliever.

Is it 7:05 yet????? Having a serious case of Pirates withdrawal.

PiratePrimate

Pirates are like a beer softball team. They have to wait to see who’s going to show up before the manager can write out the lineup.

NMR

Speaking of the Marlins, what the heck happened to ole friend Jake Stallings.

1979andCounting

He played last night and posted his usual 0 – 4. Wow, has he fell off a cliff. BC nailed the timing on trading him.

roberto

Yikes! I was not tracking his year. The Marlins May claim Perez.

ArkyWags

It gets late pretty early for catchers called up in their late 20’s.

Catch_22

Pirates Starter: TBD

Give me a break…Just tell us it’s Keller

skliesen

Marlins are scoreless in last 32 innings. Which probably means they’ll score 10 plus runs in at least one of these games. Regression to the mean and all.

buccobrach2

You had to say something, an 8 spot so far!!

skliesen

I’m kinda surprised they did tack on two more. Had to know once the dam broke, it was gonna flood. Just how it works in sports.

john_fluharty

Hidden vigorish

NMR

Sandy Alcantara has posted an absurd 4 WAR by the break SS Jazz Chisolm has nearly accrued 3, and the Marlins are still 5 games under .500 five years after trading Stanton, Ozuna, Realmuto, and Yelich.

Rebuilds are really, really hard.

1979andCounting

Shelton should give the ball to Roansy on Sunday. Sell some tickets, give the home crowd something to get excited about when you are 15 games under.

ArkyWags

It was also head scratching that they made substantial commitments to guys like Soler and Garcia. Both are the definition of inconsistent corner OF bats, and they’ve got 20-30 mil tied up in them for at least the next two seasons.

NMR

Man, that’s the hard part…you want that upside with consistency and you’re adding a bunch of zeros to the end of those contracts.

I’m more and more into single-year contracts, to be honest.

Catch_22

They traded Yellich, Ozuna, Realmulto & Stanton

The only player/prospect that has provided value is Alcantara.

I understand that Stanton wasn’t bringing back a haul because of his contract, but damn.

*Edit – Technically you could include Jazz since he was traded for Galen.

Same story in Detroit, right?

As a Pirate fan, it’s extremely depressing to see the How-it-Started>How-its-Going with the stable of horse both Detroit and Miami brought to the Bigs in their rebuilds.

1979andCounting

I don’t know how the O’s are having the success they are with that 26-man roster and pitching staff. But if they finish above .500, Brandon Hyde deserves MOY.

ArkyWags

Rebuilds that are heavily reliant on arms is a dangerous thing. Compound that with playing in the riskiest area of FA and…woof. That’s not to say teams shouldn’t spend any dough in FA but combined with that and the growing pains of those arms is jarring. Absurd as it sounds, it makes me a bit more comfortable in Pgh’s position player rebuild that should be complete next decade.

Catch_22

That’s how the Cubs did it during their last rebuild. Draft and develop bats and trade and buy arms.

Wilbur Miller

“Buy?” Did you say “buy??” You’re fired.

Catch_22

Ah, you prescribe to the theory of tinstaapp

NMR

😉

1979andCounting

No way they’ll play in the Soto derby. This franchise was not financially sound just a few years ago with heavy debt and no attendance. Jeter wasn’t allowed to spend on FA’s so he resigned. They also replaced their GM with Kim Ng so it’s too early to give her a grade. Was her hire an easy one being the first woman GM, that would play by the rules of the ownership group? That’s my thinking.

ArkyWags

If I’m the Nats, I’d want no part of trading with Miami because the primary return would be arms. Also, it feels that Soto’s value is so sky high, they almost have to attach a bad contract to it for teams to pony up. It feels likely that he goes to one of the big boys (NYY, NYM, LAD), but if I’m a mid market team that has some serious high end prospects, I’d go at him. San Diego, Seattle and St. Louis to name three.

skliesen

If he’s playing anywhere but West Coast (SD, SF, SEA, LA) I’ll be surprised.

jameschurchfield

Don’t count out Red Sox

ArkyWags

Anyone happen to follow the international draft situation? Deadline is Monday. I’d forgotten that MLB tied that to the qualifying offer. So if the players agree to an international draft, the QO system dissolves.

Wilbur Miller

There was an article about it somewhere or other a couple weeks ago. They didn’t sound especially close.

ArkyWags

Passan’s piece on ESPN illustrates the divide and difficulty they’ll face. I’d be surprised if anything gets done.

Wilbur Miller

Looks like they’ve reached a deal with Harrington.

skliesen

Did you mean Barco?
