Pirates Discussion: Pirates Head to Cincinnati for Two

The Pittsburgh Pirates kick off their road trip leading up to the All Star Break by making a one-day stop in Cincinnati for a double header.

Roansy Contreras will get the nod for game one, with Bryse Wilson scheduled for game two.

Roansy had his career worst start his last time out, giving up seven earned runs, while only lasting 1.2 innings. Contreras will graduate from rookie status if he completes 3.1 innings.

Wilson on the other hand is coming of a strong six inning start against the Brewers, where he gave up only two earned runs.

Hopefully the Pirates will carry their recent power surge into Cincy, and take advantage of the Great American Ball Park band box.

I’m still trying to get ready for 40, And I’m 54!

roibert.kasperski

Hell, I wish was,54 again……..61 just sounds old……..

Stratton seems to have turned into a blow-up-the-game specialist. Unfortunately, Dumbo will be the last person on earth to figure it out.

TNBucs

As we’ve seen by all the blowouts, Shelton loves waving the white flag, which is terribly inappropriate for the leader of Pirates.

skliesen

Stout announcing presence with authority by hitting 1st batter he faces as a Pirate.

He’ll fit right in on this pitching staff.

PirateRican21

Never seen that, first pitch for your new org, HBP!

Wilbur Miller

Gotta top Banuelos’ debut.

PirateRican21

That thought ran through my head too!

roibert.kasperski

If Banuelos would have hit Hicks he would have just about recreated Rick Vaughan’s debut against the Yanks. Reality imitating fiction.

TNBucs

Real positive for Wilson.

What will it take for Shelton to realize that Stratton should not be used as a high-leverage reliever right now? Maybe he can work his way back to that level of trust but he’s been bad for weeks.

PirateRican21

So much fun watching the offense manhandled by some AAAA pitchers.

Shultzie31

At least Bryse has looked good recently. House money at this point

ricramer

Stratton needs to be on the DFA train out of town too.

buccobrach2

It’s a God dam joke, how do these guys get paid what they get paid to make decisions that result in losses, I thought they get paid to win?? And the flood gates open to the worst team in baseball, and no .313 hitter in the lineup because he’s in AAA with nothing else to prove.

PirateRican21

There was little doubt that the flood gates were kicked open!

PirateRican21

I’ll take that silver lining

buccobrach2

Bae would have made both those plays, it’s ridiculous they have Van Meter on this team and not playing the the future which is actually better now than the present

skliesen

I thought the whole point of playing veterans was to ensure they wouldn’t make dumb plays?

Buh-Bye, JVM!

TNBucs

That should be the final straw fir VanMeter. Of course maybe if your manager doesn’t fool around and let you give up 8 hits the night before, you’d be just a little sharper. But I’ve finally seen enough.

Wilbur Miller

Have to wait for the next meeting of the Tenure Committee, which is in October.

PiratePrimate

Wilson pitched a great game and VanMeter and Gamel just fked the pooch

TNBucs

We’re paying the price for Gamel’s highlight-reel diving catches from earlier this season. Now he thinks he can dive and catch anything.

ricramer

Why not bring in Stout to face India?!?

Wilbur Miller

GMBS and Dumbo specialize in carrying players on the major league roster whom they don’t think should play in the majors.

PiratePrimate

Because we have a manager who ALWAYS pulls his pitchers one batter too late

bucsws2014

What a shame for Wilson.

PirateRican21

The defense doing Wilson wrong.

PirateRican21

I like Chavis, but he’s almost unplayable against RH pitchers.

PiratePrimate

Almost?

PirateRican21

😎

AdministrativeSky236

Does anyone know if there is any sort of stat or metric for blowout games? Obviously we’ve gotten pounded in about 5 games this year and i wasnt sure if there was anyway to quantify where we would project without those/how those are factored in

Mblee24

Yeah that is interesting because those 5 games they have like a -80 run differential. But they are on pace for 66 wins. Lasy year half way they were on pace for 58 and won 61 so maybe they get 69 this year?

Shultzie31

Just saw where six years ago today I was behind the bucs dugout in st Louis as Glasgow made the debut of his hall of fame pirates career. Oh what could have been

roibert.kasperski

We would be all speculating when he would be back from TJ and would he be the same……

Shultzie31

Yeah but we’d still have meadows, Baz and a guy who could be our current #1 /2 when he gets healthy. Lots of guys get TJ. Not the kiss of death it used to be

skliesen

Why we should draft Lesko!

PiratePrimate

Castillo can use the half season in AAA. He’ll be a better player for it next year.

AdministrativeSky236

I agree with this, I wouldnt mind having newman at the mlb level for this swap tbh

bucsws2014

Was expecting more from Cruz there with 3-0 count.

AdministrativeSky236

That was really tough to watch

AdministrativeSky236

Bad luck for bryse there

joebaseball

But he gets the point. So far he has thrown 51 strikes and 14 balls. That is a winning way.

AdministrativeSky236

I am a big chavis fan, but that dude swings at everything

b mcferren

on his way to the Braves

AdministrativeSky236

For acuna?

b mcferren

maybe Matada

joebaseball

Too many Pirate batters swing at pitches outside the zone. They need to shrink the strike zone of pitches they swing at. That alone would lead to one more walk and one more hit per week and BA over 250.

Wilbur Miller

Voges against a LHP!

Now if Chavis hits one out, there’s a good chance Voges will be able to score from first.

AdministrativeSky236

Ben gamel to the phillies, makes too much sense imo

PiratePrimate

And Vogelbach

b mcferren

for Appel?

Ha! Ha! Ha!

PiratePrimate

Van the Man. Good play.

Wilbur Miller

I’m not watching. Did something happen to the Reds’ P?

AdministrativeSky236

Bullpen game i think

PiratePrimate

Pitch limit

Wilbur Miller

Ah. I had no idea who this guy was.

PiratePrimate

Hey, we finally got some power in the lineup at third base

PiratePrimate

And a spray gun for an arm

AdministrativeSky236

Oh diego

Wilbur Miller

Beyond Hayes, they just don’t have anybody I care to see at 3B, defensively.

AdministrativeSky236

Seems like triolo might be the best overall infield utility guy in the system, we will see if he hits enough for the majors

Wilbur Miller

Oh, for sure. He’s even playing CF some now.

I’m not big on moving young guys around a lot, but Triolo is one of those guys who’s so good defensively that he’ll probably adapt quickly to any position.

AdministrativeSky236

No i agree, but potentially having both he and bae being able to play 4+ positions and on either side of the plate makes the future bench look really deep

Wilbur Miller

Welp, the Pirates just optioned Roansy to AAA.

PiratePrimate

Good way to limit his innings. He’ll be back after All Star break

Wilbur Miller

That apparently is the idea.

RAS TN

A bad one…why oh why do they want to limit his innings, they s/b pushing him to be that rare SP that goes 7 innings game after game, and the way to get to that is for him to pitch, pitch and pitch…

roibert.kasperski

If he had been 100% all of last year yes. Considering Roansy missed a big chunk of last season with a forearm strain and not pitching at all in 2020, I think it may be wise to give him a 2 week break and bring him back after the all star game

Wilbur Miller

I hate agreeing with this, but . . . I gotta agree.

PiratePrimate

Someone gave you the chance to skip a trip to Milwaukee would you take it?

Wilbur Miller

As long as the alternative wasn’t a trip to Cincinnati.

PiratePrimate

He’s on the taxi squad so it’s a beer and braut weekend. That’s not so bad but you’re still in Milwaukee. He gets that meal money

PiratePrimate

There’s brouha in the manager’s office, right now. Shelton wants to put Vogelbach in the leadoff spot and everyone’s trying to talk him out of it

roibert.kasperski

Welp, whoever wanted Gamel to lead off won the argument. Gamel prolly was yelling his own name from outside of the door 😂 😂 😂

roibert.kasperski

LOL!

ricramer

So much anger here after a nice win…..

PiratePrimate

We’re all just mad it’s taken six years for Jason Delay to get here. 🙂

Wilbur Miller

Just watched the replay of Delay’s throw. That may have been the most accurate throw on a CS I’ve ever seen.

roibert.kasperski

Pham was like “no I had to be safe…..now way man, no way !!!”

john_fluharty

And you’ve seem like 8 million of them or something like that.

Wow – just saw it myself. You are right Wilbur.

Wilbur Miller

If you ran out there and handed to the 2B, that’s where you’d put it.

roibert.kasperski

That is taking out the runner Smalls style 🙂

PirateRican21

PiratePrimate

I like Jason Delay! Great game, kid!

1979andCounting

Nothing against Jason, but his “defense is his best value” interview sounded almost identical to Jake Marisnak’s interview. God I hope Hank can hit up here!

PiratePrimate

Hey, he had a great day and he’s got a BA, even if it is only .167.

roibert.kasperski

Hank and/or Endy and/or Gutierrez

1979andCounting

We (BC especially) simply can’t have a 1/1 not pan out as 4WAR player.

roibert.kasperski

As long as one of them does I am still happy 🙂 really happy If any one does turn out to be a 4WAR and another is a 2WAR or better. Probably will pass out if 2 of them are 4WAR players. 🙂

Yankees Sign Richard Rodriguez To Minor League Contract…How about that…

My powers are limited.

roibert.kasperski

Happy Crowe Day Y’all!!!

![]comment image)_

PiratePrimate

Don’t see too many Little League plays in the bigs but Shelton loves them. That’s where he should be managing.

skliesen

Great bounce back performance by Roansy today. He took advantage of Reds hitters aggressive approach by getting them to chase the slider.

jon6er

You go Jason Delay…..

PiratePrimate

Looks like a starting catcher to me. That caught stealing throw and that swing look better than anything we’ve seen in the first 81 games, save for Perez’ career night

ArkyWags

Let’s pump the brakes.

PiratePrimate

Go w/ the throw. If only for a couple hours, he’s one of the greats — today.

roibert.kasperski

Nah, not until his next 2 games and he goes 0-fer and throws at least one into center, then brakes be pumped 🙂

1979andCounting

Water under the bridge, but it would’ve added so much more drama if Roansy pitched last night against his former team. Why didn’t Marin and Shelton accommodate that? It would have required the most minute change in his schedule, or perhaps none at all. But no, they decided to pitch Banuelos against his old team.

John Dreker

After his last start, do you want him facing the Yankees or the Reds?

1979andCounting

You nailed it. I had thought that too

1979andCounting

That’s how a cautious manager operates. An aggressive manager that wants to showcase his top arm and give Roansy a great opportunity in front of a packed house will be applauded by his 26 guys, more than a cautious passive mgs.

John Dreker

I’d say the other thing is that Contreras has to be on an innings limit after last year, so pushing him up a day is counterproductive to the overall picture. He’s at 70.1 innings this year right now after pitching 75 last year and yesterday was the halfway point of the season. They are going to have to start figuring out his future workload soon

1979andCounting

Speaking of innings limit, they could have gone Roansy for 3 – 4 and piggybacked Keller. Win – win all the way around. Take the freakin’ advantage of a situation for your fans and for the game, for your young team and for Roansy.

skliesen

I think the premise of reducing a healthy young man’s IP to below 140 is overly restrictive for no proven benefit.

All part of the “playing not to lose” culture that needs to be cut out like a cancer in this organization.

John Dreker

Considering that every team does it, I’m not sure it can be blamed on the Pirates. It’s a matter of overworking someone not used to it and there are many examples of pitchers ruining their arms with one big season unlike others in their career. Even if you think it might not be true, what benefit could it have this year for the Pirates? 68 wins instead of 65? I’m not chancing it with a prized pitcher to be a slightly better awful team. They work his innings right this year and he’s good to go full-time all of next year, which will probably matter a lot more than this year.

roibert.kasperski

Considering he did miss time with a forearm strain last year and did not pitch in 2020 sounds reasonable whether proven or not. Giving him a rest now for a couple of weeks should not impact anything. Not like they are going to shut him down.

skliesen

Your changing the discussion point. If Pirates main concern is Contreras health for next year, than by all means shut him down early. But isn’t there something to be gained by pitching through adversity? And pitching a full season as an MLB Pitcher for 1st time qualifies as adversity.

Far more evidence throwing the baseball faster than naturally capable of causes tendons and ligaments to blowout, but we’re not seeing teams limit speed training programs. Why?

The hypocrisy is thick enough I can cut it with a knife.

Danatural08

Great job by Roansy today. One bad pitch, but was pretty efficient & doesn’t tax bullpen for the day. Uge

PirateRican21

I’ll say it again, Diego and Chavis are excellent bench pieces, lefty killers, versatile defenders with pop. Two lefty outfielder (Madris, Mitchell?) and perhaps Bins should round out the bench next year.

chappy

Way too early to write off Diego as a bench guy. Way too early.

PirateRican21

You are right, when I say bench piece is more like a weak side platoon, needs to get on base more, but this is only his first taste.

PiratePrimate

Some of these Reds’ swings and misses are just wild. Swinging at pitches Delay has to lunge at to catch

AdministrativeSky236

Diego with a babip of .220, he should get some positive regression!

PirateRican21

Might needs to play more for that, but yeah.

Shultzie31

Good thing they split this double header today! God forbid they’d miss a gate between these two.

Shultzie31

Hell added together they might make a somewhat respectable crowd

PirateRican21

Just tuned in, let’s see, oh a no hitter watch alert!
