Prospect Watch: FCL Pirates Witness Daytime Fireworks; Kevin Newman with the Walk-Off Winner

Happy July 4th to all. I’ll be celebrating by following minor league games all day. The full-season teams usually have off on Monday, but they want to take advantage of the holiday for a fireworks day, so Tuesday is the day off this week. A lot of TBD on the schedule for the starters, so I’ll fill them in as they become available. Three day games and four night games today. I’m inviting you to join me, shall you?

Game Recap:

Starter Osvaldo Bido gave up three runs on six hits and two walks in five innings. While the results weren’t great, he was certainly efficient and throwing strikes, finishing with 48 strikes on 68 pitches. Dillon Peters had his rehab transferred to Indianapolis. He retired all three batters he faced, needing 11 pitches. Eric Hanhold pitched a scoreless seventh and Joe Jacques threw a scoreless eighth, then left with two outs and a man on in the ninth. John O’Reilly  came on and gave up a single, but stranded the inherited runner with a strikeout. He allowed a run in the tenth, but Indianapolis still won 5-4.

Indianapolis got three of their runs on a bases loaded single by Cal Mitchell in the first. He got two RBIs and a third run scored on a throwing error. The won the game nine innings later on the final swing of the game, as Kevin Newman hit a walk-off single for the 5-4 victory. He had three hits and a walk. Ji-hwan Bae reached base three times on two singles and a walk. He scored a run and stole his 20th base. Indianapolis won despite leaving 14 runners on base. They went 4-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

Game Recap:

Nick Garcia has been one of the better pitchers in the system over the last month. He didn’t have it in the first inning tonight, but settled down and pitched well over the next four frames. He allowed four runs on five hits and four walks, with four strikeouts. He now has a 3.59 ERA in 67.2 innings, with 61 strikeouts. Denny Roman followed with two scoreless innings and no hits allowed. Cameron Junker came on in the eighth and recorded the next five outs, before Oliver Mateo had to get him out of a bases loaded jam to end the game with an 11-4 win.

Greensboro was down 4-0 before they scored a run. Mike Jarvis doubled in the first run, then Hudson Head singled in Jarvis. Francisco Acuna doubled in Head. In the seventh inning, Head hit his fourth homer. A Sammy Siani grounder scored a run. Jarvis hit his first homer since joining Greensboro. Endy Rodriguez capped the scoring with a three-run homer, his ninth of the season. Head also hit his 11th double of the season, stole his sixth base, and he scored three runs. Sammy Siani stole his 20th base.

Game Recap:

Valentin Linarez has struggled this season, coming into Monday’s game with a 5.80 ERA. He lowered that significantly in this game with what could be his best career outing. He went 6.1 shutout innings on four hits, one walk and five strikeouts, knocking 72 points off of his ERA. Johan Montero finished off the game, recording the final eight outs on one hit, no walks and five strikeouts. The Marauders won 5-0.  Bradenton scored four runs in the first with help from two errors and a balk with a man on third. They added a run late in the game on a Randy Romero single. Bradenton had just five hits in the game, on each from five different players, and they were all singles.  Deivis Nadal stole his eighth base. Sergio Campana left the game early after making a catch in the bottom of the first inning.

Game Recap:

Alessandro Ercolani walked four batters in two innings, but he didn’t allow any hits or runs. The same can’t be said about the rest of the Pirates pitchers, as they combined to allow 19 runs in just five innings. The Pirates list 19-6 in the scheduled seven-inning game. Miguel Diaz allowed three runs, Jose Garces gave up three runs, Luigi Hernandez served up seven runs, Adrian Mendez surrendered five runs and Raydel Velette let in the final run. The Pirates had a lead in this game, as Enmanuel Terrero singled in the first run. Jauri Custodio tripled in a run in the third, then Javier Rivas doubled in a run. A fourth run scored on a double play, and then Pirates led 4-2 at that point. The Rays then scored the next 17 runs. In the seventh, the Pirates got bases loaded walks to Omar Alfonzo and Jesus Castillo for their final runs. Juan Jerez joined the team on rehab and went 0-for-2 before being replaced at third base in the sixth. Bubba Chandler drew three walks.

Game Recap:

This game was suspended with a 4-4 tie in the sixth due to rain. Starter Adolfo Oviedo allowed three runs in four innings, then Luis Brito gave up a run in his two innings. The Pirates scored on a sacrifice fly by Robert De Paula, then got their second run on an error, followed by an RBI single by Richard Ramirez.  A Christopher Orelin double scored the fourth run.

Game Recap:

The Pirates Gold won 5-3 in seven innings on Monday. Andres Silvera has been the best pitching in the entire Pirates system over the last month. He saw his 0.54 ERA go up today, but not by much, as he allowed one earned run in four innings, with no walks and six strikeouts. He has 24 strikeouts and an 0.58 WHIP in 20.2 innings. Jesus Clode finished out the win with one run over three innings. The Pirates scored first with a sacrifice fly from Yordany De Los Santos. An error led to two runs in the sixth, which tied the game.  Eddy Rodriguez broke the tie with a seventh inning single, then a Ruben Vizcaya single added an insurance run. Vizcaya also collected his third double, scored twice and drew a walk.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball.
