Prospect Watch: Huge Day for Andres Alvarez in Altoona Loss

Lots of rain-shortened action around the system, although everybody got a game in.  Jack Brannigan made his debut in the FCL.

Game Recap:

Indianapolis (47-50) came from behind in the bottom of the tenth to beat Louisville, 5-4.  Indy tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, 3-3, when Travis Swaggerty doubled and Carter Bins singled to score him.  In the top of the tenth, Bins threw the free runner out stealing, but Cam Vieaux gave up a two-out home run.  Indy’s first two batters in the bottom half fanned, but Rodolfo Castro doubled and Diego Castillo singled to win the game.  Starter Jerad Eickhoff fanned four over two scoreless innings.  Nick Mears, newly assigned to AAA, gave up a run and struck out two in one inning.  Cody Bolton and Travis MacGregor each threw two hitless and scoreless innings.  Indy hitters fanned 15 times and didn’t draw a walk.  Castro had a triple as well as the double, and Swaggerty also had two hits.

Game Recap:

Altoona (47-50) lost to Akron, 5-2.  Aaron Shortridge had a rough start.  He gave up four hits and five walks in two and two-thirds innings; he was probably lucky to allow only four runs.  Carmen Mlodzinski worked two innings in relief, giving up a solo home run and striking out four.  J.C. Flowers allowed just a hit over three scoreless innings, striking out five.  The offense came from Andres Alvarez, who hit a pair of solo home runs, giving him 17 longballs on the year.  Alvarez also had a double, a walk and a steal, his 18th.  Blake Sabol had a single, a double and a walk.  Jared Triolo and Connor Scott each had a double and a walk, and Triolo stole his 20th base.  The Curve had a lot of chances, but went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.  Liover Peguero committed his 24th error.

Game Recap:

Greensboro (42-53) lost to Bowling Green, 11-6.  The Hoppers partly did themselves in, committing five errors.  Jack Carey had what was undoubtedly a frustrating start.  He fanned five in two and two-thirds innings and allowed no earned runs, but he was charged with four unearned runs.  Dariel Lopez had his own problems.  He had a single and a double, but he also committed four of the errors, including two that let in Carey’s runs.  Lopez now has 24 errors total on the year at all positions, along with an .874 fielding percentage at third base.  Domingo Gonzalez, Logan Hofmann and Matt Eckelman followed Carey and gave up seven runs, all earned, and seven walks over six combined innings.  Hudson Head had a big day, with a three-run home run, a single and a walk.  He scored three times.  The longball was Head’s ninth on the season, with six coming in his last 18 games.  Yoyner Fajardo had two hits, and Endy Rodriguez and Francisco Acuna each had a double.

Game Recap:

Bradenton (49-47) beat Fort Myers, 2-1, in a game limited to seven innings after a two-hour rain delay at the start.  Bubba Chandler started and had some control problems, walking four in three and a third innings.  He only gave up one hit and one run, though.  Anthony Solometo finished with three scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and a walk.  The Marauders got both runs in the sixth, on a Juan Jerez sacrifice fly and a Wyatt Hendrie single.  They had six hits in the game, with Maikol Escotto getting a single and double, and Deivis Nadal a double.  Tsung-Che Cheng and Jase Bowen each had a single and a walk, and Cheng stole his 20th base.

Game Recap:

The FCL Pirates (24-16) came back from a 6-1 deficit and beat the Braves, 7-6, in ten innings.  Jack Brannigan, the team’s third round draft pick, made the first debut for a 2022 draftee.  He played third and made three plate appearances before leaving for a pinch runner.  He lined out to deep left, walked and was hit by a pitch.  (He was not injured.)  Grant Ford and Lolo Sanchez made rehab appearances.  Ford started and threw two innings.  He had a rough beginning, giving up three straight singles, but settled down after that.  Ford was charged with two runs, one earned.  Hung-Leng Chang followed and got hit hard, allowing six hits and four runs over three innings.  Antwone Kelly and Jorge Ramos followed and worked three and two scoreless innings, respectively, each fanning four.  Ramos stranded the free runner in the top of the tenth.  A lot of the offense came from Omar Alfonzo and Esmerlyn Valdez.  Alfonzo drove in a pair with his first home run of the year and a single.  Valdez drove in three, with a two-run double and a groundout.  Deion Walker, who ran for Brannigan, had two hits and two runs scored.  Solomon Maguire had a pinch-hit, RBI single in the eighth to tie the game and also contributed a sacrifice bunt to move the free runner to third in the tenth.  The run then scored on a wild pitch.

Game Recap:

The Black team (19-23) beat Tampa Bay, 4-1, in a game stopped in the top of the sixth by rain.  The good guys got a break, as Tampa Bay had runners at the corners and nobody out when the game ended.  Luis Joseph started and allowed an unearned run over two and two-thirds innings while fanning five.  Greiber Mendez went the last two and a third, allowing no hits and two walks, with both of the latter on base when the game stopped.  Most of the offense came from Ewry Espinal, Miguel Sosa and Eddy Rodriguez.  Sosa hit his third home run of the year, walked twice, scored twice and drove in two.  Espinal walked twice and scored twice, and Rodriguez had two hits.  Sosa and Espinal each stole a base.

Game Recap:

The Gold team (29-13) lost, 3-1, to LAD Bautista in a game shortened by rain to six innings.  Starter Dermis Ordonez allowed no hits and one unearned run in three innings, although he walked three.  Fares Sanchez gave up the other two runs.  The offense consisted of singles by Yordany De Los Santos and Carlos Tirado, and a double by Isaias Dipre.   De Los Santos drove in the only run with a sacrifice fly.

Wilbur Miller
Having followed the Pirates fanatically since 1965, Wilbur Miller is one of the fast-dwindling number of fans who’ve actually seen good Pirate teams. He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
