Prospect Watch: Early Home Run Barrage Dooms Indy

Indy’s winning streak goes by the boards.

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

Prospect Watch: Thursday Night Action in Indianapolis

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

Game Time: 7:05pm

Box Score: LINK

Starting Pitcher: Peter Solomon

  • Final Line: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Notable Performances:

  • Endy Rodriguez 2-4
  • Malcom Nunez 1-3, BB

Game Recap:

Indianapolis (74-71) lost to St. Paul, 4-1.  Starter Peter Solomon gave up all the runs.  He only allowed three hits, but they all left the park.  And who is Peter Solomon, you’re probably asking?  He’s a former Astros prospect.  He never did much in the minors with Houston, which is probably why Ben Cherington claimed him off waivers.  The Indy bullpen did well, at least, putting up five and a third scoreless innings.  Nick Mears had a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth straight scoreless outing, as he seems to be coming around after non-TJ elbow surgery.  The hitters managed only five singles, with the only run scoring on a sac fly by Blake Sabol.  Endy Rodriguez went 2-for-4, which lowered his AAA batting average.  Malcom Nunez had a hit and a walk.

Ji-hwan Bae is headed to Pittsburgh. Our own Ryan Palencer broke the news late late last night. More on it when it becomes official https://twitter.com/RyanPalencer/status/1573150027652145153

Have not seen you on lately – is it you or me, because I disappear for days at a time also. Bae could possibly be a strong trading chip because of his signing by the Braves, and how he has adapted well at each level. I like he and Castro as complements to Hayes and Cruz, and I think either Bae or Castro could learn how to play 1B quickly enough to be there in 2023, if needed.

I would also want Endy Rodriguez as the primary Catcher, 1B, DH to start 2023 – or a Pirate start such as mid-April or beginning of May. Really thought EndyRod was in a groove such that he could be respectable in MLB if given the opportunity to finish the last 10-12 games this season.

Rodriguez will probably be the best option on Opening Day, unless Roberto Perez is both healthy (about a 50/50 chance with his past) and resigned. With how Rodriguez is playing, you would be crazy to give away a full season of control just to get him up two weeks earlier in a season where it’s highly unlikely they will compete. I really wouldn’t mind seeing him get more IF/OF time early next year in Indy because by mid-season we could see a Davis/Rodriguez combo behind home plate that could stick around for a long time. Davis won’t be ready on Opening Day, regardless of what 2023 Twitter thinks.

Even discounting his insane AA and AAA stats, Endy might be a good early extension candidate. He only signed for $10,000, so an extra million or two might come in handy. In that scenario service time manipulation has mostly downsides.

It’s his 1st season as a starting Catcher – as good as he does look back there – Endy very likely needs more development time defensively. It’s the hardest position to learn. And the most important.

How about just using the term “service time”?
