AFL Recap: Nick Gonzales Drives in a Pair in Surprise Loss

Published:

The first game of the Arizona Fall League season on Monday was busy for Pittsburgh Pirates prospects, with all four pitchers seeing action, as well as Henry Davis. Tuesday night’s game was extremely quiet, as Nick Gonzales was the only Pirates player in action.

Gonzales batted first and played second base. He grounded out to shortstop in the first inning, then struck out swinging in the third. In each of his next two at-bats, he flew out to right field, leaving him 0-for-4 to that point with Surprise trailing 6-0 in the eighth.  They mounted a comeback with two outs in the ninth and Gonzales batted with the bases loaded as the tying run. He couldn’t tie the game, but his two-run single made it 6-4. The next batter struck out, ending the game.

Here’s the boxscore

Surprise plays tomorrow night at 9:35 PM ET.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
