Welcome to the Pirates Prospects daily video rundown, where we pull some of the top videos of the Pittsburgh Pirates across the internet.
Malcom Nunez
Acquired in the Jose Quintana trade, Nunez showed a great approach at the plate in his early time with the Pirates, along with some power.

Thought of as a first base/DH only prospect, he played some third base last year, even making a couple of strong stops and able to start a few double plays while there. He’s still working out there right now in Spring, and could factor into the third base rotation in Indianapolis to start the season.
Baseball people tell me that PITT corner prospect Malcolm Nuñez has good glove game. Now that I get to see it for myself, they’re right! Nuñny can pick it! #defense pic.twitter.com/yivRKRiiBB

Shalin Polanco
The Pirates gave Polanco one of the biggest signing bonuses for an International prospect in their franchise’s history. Still just 19-years-old (had a birthday early in February), he is still very raw and should finally get a crack at Bradenton this year.

This video is a little bit of a doubleheader worth of information. It starts off with a look at Contreras in his bullpen session from Saturday. It also shows Chase De Jong facing Endy Rodriguez in live BP.
Anthony began writing over 10 years ago, starting a personal blog to cover the 2011 MLB draft, where the Pirates selected first overall. After bouncing around many websites covering hockey, he refocused his attention to baseball, his first love when it comes to sports. He eventually found himself here at Pirates Prospects in late 2021, where he covers the team’s four full season minor league affiliates.
Did Nunez come into ST looking leaner, or does everybody look better in the Florida sun?
So let me get this straight, Nuñez playing 3b and Triolo 1b…….WTF?
I get why they are doing it, but I will have a good chuckle the first time Indy posts a lineup that has Nunez at third and Triolo playing first
I get it too, but Nuñez needs work at 1b for what I’ve read and even if he improves at 3b ( his original position) he’ll be like 5th in the depth chart. Triolo at 1b, only as a super utility, not as his new home unless somehow he finds more power.
Nunez played all of 2022 in AA as a 21 year old. 298 AB at Springfield (Texas Lg) while in the Cardinals org, and another 105 AB at Altoona. Key combined takeaways were his 38 EBH (22 HR,16 doubles), 87 RBI, 65 BB/98 K. Defensively, he played 90 games at 1B in 2022 with only 3 E’s, 995 fldg %. He is a 1B/DH now and in the future.
They are trying to accelerate Triolo because he will play all of 2023 as a 25 year old. He will start at AAA, but I would not be surprised to see him at PNC by July.
Polanco had a party and didn’t invite us? We would have gone!
