World Baseball Classic Recap: Duane Underwood Jr. Contributes to Puerto Rico’s Perfect Game

Published:

Here’s a look at Monday’s action in the World Baseball Classic, as well as a look ahead to today’s schedule. There are only 15 more games left in the tournament, including today.

Great Britain pulled off the upset on Colombia with a 7-5 victory. Chavez Young went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a walk and his fourth stolen base. He stole three bases in Sunday’s game. He is 3-for-9 with three walks in three games.

Duane Underwood Jr pitched the eighth inning for Puerto Rico in their win over Israel. He got two ground outs and a pop out on ten pitches to retire the side in order. He got former Pirates Alex Dickerson and Ryan Lavarnway for the second and third outs. Those outs ended up being big because Puerto Rico finished off the game in the bottom of the eighth with a 10-0 victory (ten-run rule), so Underwood Jr actually finished off a perfect game.

USA won 12-1 over Canada.

Korea beat China 22-2 in five innings. Both teams were already eliminated before this game started. It was the final game for both teams.

The Dominican Republic defeated Nicaragua by a 6-1 score.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
