Live Discussion: Pirates vs Red Sox, 7:10 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates (2-2) take on the Boston Red Sox (2-2) in game two of a three-game series at Fenway Park. First pitch is at 7:10 PM.

The Pirates made a move behind the plate prior to tonight’s game.

Here are the lineups:

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.

Incredible night by Bae, Roansy, Reynolds and the bullpen. Too bad they can’t find another Chuck Tanner or Jim Leyland. Hell, since I was around for that era I’d love to have another Danny Murtaugh. I know many people think managers don’t matter but those guys were chess masters and especially Murtaugh.

Wilbur Miller

Finally found a clip of Bae’s catch. Holy ****.

Wilbur Miller

Well, following a horrible first inning yesterday, they gave up two runs in 17 innings. In Fenway. That’s encouraging.

GreenWeenie

Raise it!

skliesen

Raise it!

Let’s get the sweep tomorrow!

1979andCounting

Who closes? Underwood? Surely not Crowe. DeJong?

skliesen

Keller w a complete game shutout makes it a moot point.

Wilbur Miller

Interesting that we’re not seeing Crowe and De Jong in these close ones. Moreta, the Zazzer and now Hernandez.

jon6er

Must be something Shelton’s smoking, but seriously they are going to have to use 1 or 3 of those guys tomorrow so it will be interesting.

PirateRican21

It’s been the pattern in the three victories!

mpg43952

What closer? Complete game!

jon6er

Lol, complete games are rarified air these days. That’s why I laugh at any thought Shelton and his staff know what’s going on. Granted the average Pirate pitcher aren’t of the “best stock” but I challenge the stat guys to find any team that their starting pitchers throw more pitches than the Pirates through the first 4 innings during the Shelton era.

1979andCounting

Agree……rainout after 6.

Iowasteel

Out homered the opposition. Nice.

skliesen

Willie would give Bae a gold star for that catch.

1979andCounting

Griffey would add a star too.

1979andCounting

Speechless. OF play has been wow!

phieralph

BAE!!
WHAT A CATCH!!!

waitwhat

Insane.

jtkuch

Holderman touching 99

GreenWeenie

What’s that pitch he’s throwing at 83?

jtkuch

Game day calls it a “Sweeper”, not kidding

GreenWeenie

Heckofa pitch after touching 99.

1979andCounting

Got the Green Monster almost close enough to touch and Key’s hitting opposite field. So disappointing. Thought we had something in ST.

GreenWeenie

I like him, but I don’t turn-on the TV to watch him.

esd4

No matter how often I tell myself that ST doesn’t matter, I still get fooled by a handful of things every year. This year, the biggest one was the whole Ke’Bryan Hayes/point of contact stuff. I really tricked myself into thinking he was going to elevate to the pull side more this year. Oops.

sewer2001

Deciding he isn’t based in fife games is just as absurd as believing a small sample like spring training. You’re making the same mistake in reverse.

esd4

Nah. The idea that he isn’t going to pull/elevate is more based on these five games being a continuation of his entire career of not pulling/elevating. You’d need some significant sample of evidence in order to believe that he’s not that guy. We don’t have to form opinions entirely from scratch every time a new season starts.

NMR

Five games, plus the absolute entirety of his professional career.

“Small sample” lolol

ArkyWags

Half of the people on here go batshit over ST stats.

skliesen

Since when do Pirates get calls like that?

GreenWeenie

Yes! And Arroyo still looking befuddled. 🤣

GreenWeenie

Expanded strike zone. I like it!

Iowasteel

Generous call on strike 3. Gladly accepted.

skliesen

And strike 1.

GreenWeenie

Lining the field in slow motion. That’s not baseball Zen for me.

Wilbur Miller

Hmm, R5 guy on in a close-ish game. He may blow it up or not, but it’s good to see him get the shot.

1979andCounting

Hedges could not steal a base if they were Little League distance. Sorry to kick a guy when he’s down with a concussion…….just saying Heineman could cover until Endy.

GreenWeenie

Agree. I liked TH last year. Not sure why they didn’t just go with him.

PirateRican21

Santana must be a vegetarian, seem to hate steaks!

skliesen

Ok I’m going with 1st inning game 7 for first Santana RBI.

1979andCounting

Sounds perfect. Home Opener!

GreenWeenie

He’s made some good contact. It’s coming.

Wilbur Miller

Zero RBIs, 18 LOB.

Wilbur Miller

Hard to believe the Red Sox keep throwing pitches where BRey can reach them.

GreenWeenie

If they don’t sign him, it’s going to look so bad…..

sewer2001

I disagree. If he insists on the opt out in year four, an unprecedented thing for a player with more than two years arb remaining, then they don’t look bad at all. Only to fans who refuse to consider things fairly and just want to bash.

Are you Nutting’s CFO

Iowasteel

The Roansy good: low pitch count and only one walk and no HRs
The bad: only 2 Ks
Hard not to be pleased.

skliesen

He pitched great! As in Tony the Tiger GGGGGGGGREAT!

GreenWeenie

I don’t think the 2 strikeouts is so bad given the low pitch count.

GreenWeenie

Sweet!!!!!

skliesen

I also had 6th inning of game 5 in the Cruz throwing error pool. Is it too late to play Mega Millions?

Wilbur Miller

That’s only the Pirates’ second error of the year.

1979andCounting

Piraterican jinxed Cruz with his comment last night. I wasn’t going to touch that comment. Actually logged off as fast I could.

loehr22

I thought the same thing last night, lol

PirateRican21

Ok maybe it was…

jon6er

Prosecutor: Do you remember saying “laser throws chest high”?

Born4rf

Whoa, a game thread!! Glad I checked back. Not going to jinx any one having a good game, but I agree this lineup looks like it fell out of a used piñata. maybe they signed Santana to Coach and forgot?

PirateRican21

CSN with el sombrero dorado.

1979andCounting

Translation: hat trick

PirateRican21

EightMenOut

Choi has been treated very poorly by umpires this year. This game there have been three balls called strikes against him.

jon6er

I agree but when you know a umps strike zone good hitters adjust!

patrick_kelly

Those 2 strikeouts aren’t really helping my fantasy squad Ro.

jtkuch

I’ll take being the first starter on the team to reach the 6th inning

Wilbur Miller

Santana so far: zero RBIs, 16 LOB.

NMR

Just as we predicted, shift ban clearly paying off.

Scrappy2499

Some hard hit balls right at folks…not sure why they don’t play Choi a bit more?

jtkuch

He’s started every single game to this point. Today they have 3 DHs in the lineup and 2 actual outfielders on the bench. Make it make sense

EightMenOut

Santana is a good fielding first baseman, Cutch is a good fielding RF

jtkuch

Real stellar over there at first

1979andCounting

Man, we could have used a pick right there on Cruz bad throw.

jtkuch

Are they that afraid to put Choi at first? Why trade for him then?

Wilbur Miller

Simple, really. The GM and manager are incompetent.

jon6er

Yeah seems to be a missing narrative generally!

PirateRican21

Extend Santana, extend Santana!

GreenWeenie

Thought Santana hit it out. That hurt.

1979andCounting

Where’s BMac? Still want to run BRey out of town?

b mcferren

trade him high

NMR

When Tim becomes General Manager.

1979andCounting

His stock is certainly rising. He’s also carrying this team offensively.

GreenWeenie

Roansy with the Farmer’s Blow….love it!

adicesa14

As enjoyable as it is to see Bryan Reynolds so hot is his 4 home runs have produced 5 RBI’s.!

Wilbur Miller

I want to say something about the guy on the mound, but I don’t want to jinx anything.

GreenWeenie

His ears look normal, so it’s not that.

NMR

Back to back changeups!

PirateRican21

Quota filled! A little surprised he tried it against their best hitter, I would have preferred someone like McGuierre.

1979andCounting

Way to cover the bag Roansy.

GreenWeenie

Dang! Bucs are putting wood to the ball!

darrenxsmith

Why no Suwinski against a righthander?

PirateRican21

And sit Santana? Be real!

GreenWeenie

He had some quality AB’s last night. They probably don’t want to use them all up.

jon6er

Yeah you usually send guys down to get at bats when they are struggling but here is a guy who is giving you good at bats and you sit him so you can give the front office’s off season aging veteran acquisition some more space, lol. Some things never change.

1979andCounting

Give that man a contract!

Wilbur Miller

Good lord, get it done before it’s too late.

skliesen

Each HR adds another million $$$ to the deal.

Scrappy2499

Or opt out a year earlier

patrick_kelly

So….Reynolds totally isn’t signing the extension.

Ok who besides me had Delay and Bae to be the first two Pirates to hit it over The Green Monster?

GreenWeenie

Actually I did as well. It came to me in a dream, but in my dream, Bae had bunny ears.

Tim Williams

I thought CSN foul tipped that pitch that was ruled a passed ball. I think he was saying the same thing, walking back to first. Looking at the replay, it looks like it hit McGuire’s glove, then shinguard, but it was close.

GreenWeenie

I thought the same thing. Was surprised it was called a SO.

patrick_kelly

Baeday!

PirateRican21

This

PirateRican21

Bae with a shot!!! Go Bae!
Oppo power????

Last edited 1 month ago by PirateRican21
GreenWeenie

I always knew Bae had power.

1979andCounting

Very happy to have Heineman back. I think he’s much better D than Delay. And both have sneaky bats that can contribute……unlike Hedges.

PirateRican21

Santana is proving that his numbers against RH were not a fluke and yet he’s still batting 4th!!!!!

sewer2001

It’s hard to understand. He’s clearly the weak side of the platoon. Why did they trade for Choi to bench him 4 out if 5 games?

PirateRican21

I brought that same point on the very first game!!!!!

PirateRican21

👍
