Getting this up a little late today due to the late news, so this is an abbreviated article.
There were a few big league moves if you missed them. All of the details here.
Roansy Contreras (2-1, 4.57) takes on right-hander Tony Gonsolin, who is making his season debut. 6:35 PM start time.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball.
When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
What a game! Might just have something this year… still have a gauntlet coming in a few weeks but cant imagine much of a better start than this
They are responding well and this is in spite of losing their unicorn O’Neill Cruz. I’m fairly confident this starting pitching is for real and when I see the bullpen get up and see names like Hernandez, Ramirez, Moreta, Stephenson and Holderman to go along with Bednar I feel a confidence I haven’t felt the last couple of years with the caveat that most of the names I mentioned still have a lot left to prove they belong. But those guys have shown some pretty good stuff in their appearances so far. Long season but actually having hope is a good thing!
Raise it! 15 runs in the first 2 games against the Dodgers.
Definitely the way to respond after that terrible loss last night. This team just might be pretty good.
Great response after last night and a great moment seeing Drew Maggi get his first mlb ab and becoming more Pirate lore.
So what’s next, Boston’s debut?
He can finish tomorrow’s blowout win.
I’ll take that!
Please get a hit Drew! Please! Please! Pretty Please with Sugar on top!
Maggi’s going in.
If he does, I’m going to cry.
Nope.
Now he’s gonna hit for Cutch.
Get your tissues ready
So deserving.
OPEN THE FLOODGATES!
Listening to Dodger’s radio, they are complaining in a conservative way, that the Pirates shouldn’t be stealing bases with a 6 run lead!!!! WTF? They came back down 5 yesterday!!!
Obviously, any Pirate who gets on in the eighth has to steal. Second and third.
When do the Maggi chants start?
Let’s start them: Maggi, Maggi, Maggi, …
Or Dreeewww … (we’re not booing)
Now a safer lead. Get Moreta up.
Not to interrupt the fun, but Davis just hit #5 . A breakout from him would be . . . welcome.
👍👍👍
Dude, how is that interrupting? Go Davis!
Just watched it. He doesn’t hit cheapies.
Is up on MLBTV, laser shot!
RODOLFO CASTROOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Making you proud, all us proud!
Ump wearing the WIDE angle glasses today. Strike zone extra wide.
Great job by Ro today, I don’t know how long he’s gonna get by with “just” the slider, but I take it!
He will become our Pedro Martinez.
3 GIDPs tonight. Those are killers.
Ok boys let’s score ten, or one.
I would let that be it for Contreras tonight. Not sure what Shelton will do. He has been really sticking with his starter so far this year.
Trouble is, who goes 7-8? Bolton? Holderman and Stephenson pitched last night.
Was just going to type similar. 24 pitches that inning.
So who’s available? I guess Ramirez, Hernandez could go another inning and Bednar.
Moreta maybe? Stephenson just threw a 10 pitch 7th
We know very little……
Moreta it was! I love Moreta, Hernandez, and Stephenson. It is too soon to think all three are long term solutions but so far so good 😁
ROE V. WADE
LETS GO
Did Capps just refer to Heyward as Jason Bay?
Ugh
Is it just me or has strike zone been expanded this entire year?
Yes it has
OK Ro one more scoreless please. And a GIDP here would be nice.
Is the 1B umpire a lifelong Dodgers fan? Good grief, that play wasn’t even close!
I don’t recall seeing two outs challenged on one play. Was wondering how that got handled if one was overturned, the other stood. I was thinking the crew chief might make Shelton decide which one to challenge first, and if he picked 2b, he loses the call and the challenge. While this worked in our favor, it doesn’t seem right Shelton could challlenge, lose, and retain the challenge.
Capps, Block and BC….3 foreheads in a row.
Those are fiveheads
Joe might be getting a bit over expose, they should consider Marcano against some RH hitters.
Agree. Give Joe a break.
It happens all the time, a platoon player excels at platooning and then they start getting at bats that they shouldn’t!
Ump took one off the foul tip, because he made a bad call on the first pitch. That’s how baseball works.
Another good AB for Jack….nice.
LGB from 117!
BRey: y’all listen to his interviews? Dude has a deep-ass voice. Porn-stache on the way back. Dude will be raking, watch.
C’mon BRey!!!! Dingerz to celebrate the contract!!!
Not quite the distance……
Drive to CF by Delay!! It’s a single no matter how hard. I’ll go with drive 🙂
Happy Ro Day Y’all!!
Jack with a great AB! Got the walk, fouled off every pitch he saw that was a strike. Love it
Gonsolin’s numbers from last year are pretty unreal… And it doesn’t look like he’s lost a step.
Great AB’s from Reynolds, Hayes and Cutch. Looks like it’s gonna be that kind of night. Try to get to the bullpen. Work the counts.
