Bastardo was 18 when the Pirates signed him. He appears to be strictly a corner outfielder.
2013 Bastardo played right field regularly, showing a good arm with seven assists in just 43 games. He hit better each month, his OPS going from .663 to .859 to 1.012 from June to August. He showed a little power and walked a lot, although his K rate was a little high. 2014 Bastardo missed the first half of the GCL season due to a shoulder injury. After that, he played strictly in right and hit very well. The walk and K rates were terrible, but it’s a small sample size. 2015 The Pirates moved Bastardo up to Morgantown, where he got only sporadic playing time. He hit very little when he played. 2016 The Pirates moved Bastardo down a level to Bristol, where he was the primary right fielder. He put up nearly identical numbers to the year before at a higher level, with no power at all and a lot of strikeouts. At this point, Bastardo doesn’t even look like a good organizational player, having been overmatched in advanced rookie ball at age 22. The Pirates will nevertheless move him up to West Virginia to serve as the fourth outfielder in 2017. |
