WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Merejo signed slightly later than the norm for Latin American prospects.  He’s a very small RHP who’s put up very good numbers in the DSL.  He’s similar to Isaac Sanchez in that, despite his slight build, he throws hard, currently about 92-93 mph.

2010
DSL:  4-2-8, 2.95 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 42.2 IP, 3.4 BB/9, 6.1 K/9

Merejo pitched well as a closer in his debut at age 19.

2011
DSL: 4-1-14, 1.80 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 35.0 IP, 2.8 BB/9, 9.5 K/9

Still serving as his team’s closer, Merejo put up impressive numbers, including a high K rate.

2012
R:  1-1-4, 4.32 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 25.0 IP, 1.8 BB/9, 9.0 K/9

Merejo spent 2012 in the GCL, where he was the primary closer.  He had a good K rate and didn’t walk many, but gave up a lot of hits.  Left-handed batters hit .357 against him, although the sample size is very small.

Merejo has a good arm, but he probably doesn’t have a lot of projection and he’ll be 22 by the time the short season leagues open play in 2013.  He could be in the New York-Penn League or the GCL.
