WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
|Romano signed a little late, just after he’d turned 19. He throws 89-90 mph, with a curve and change.
Romano started the season in the bullpen and finished it in the rotation. He didn’t allow a lot of baserunners; his ERA was worse than his other numbers. He didn’t walk many or miss a lot of bats.
Romano came to the GCL and got into four games, three of them starts. He didn’t appear after mid-July. I don’t know whether that was due to the team’s addition of several prep pitching draftees or due to injury.
Romano pitched in relief for Bristol. He didn’t walk many and had a decent K rate, but he got hit hard, with opponents batting .298 and slugging .470. He was involved in a number of Bristol’s many late-inning meltdowns, hence the large number of losses. He pitched well against right-handed batters, holding them to a 245/278/382 line, but left-handed hitters hammered him for a 379/397/606 line.
Romano returned to Bristol and was much more effective, pitching mainly in 3- or 4-inning relief stints. After ten games at Bristol, he moved up to Morgantown and got into another five. He was less effective there due to control issues. Possibly due to the curve, Romano was more effective against right-handed hitters. They batted only .198 against him. Left-handed hitters batted .274.
Romano made a lot of progress in 2018, but he was 23 and is already eligible for the Rule 5 draft.
