With today’s DFA of Dana Eveland, a trade that appeared suspect at the time now looks even worse. Essentially, the Pirates traded Ronald Uviedo for three non-descript appearances by Eveland. It seems like they simply threw away a minor asset. However, maybe there is more to this situation than what meets the eye.
The Pirates designated Dana Eveland for assignment today. The move leaves the team with two openings on the active roster. Corresponding transactions will be made this afternoon.
The Pirates have placed Zach Duke on the 15-day disabled list with "a strained flexor pronator muscle in the left elbow," retroactive to June 17th. He is expected to miss two additional starts. The Pirates have not yet determined a replacement for Duke's start on Saturday.
UPDATE (6/22/2010, 9:20 PM): Dejan reports that Holt's MCL is sprained but his meniscus is torn. He will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the season.
The Pirates' front office has received a tremendous amount of criticism for its handling of the Pedro Alvarez promotion. Pirates' president Frank Coonelly announced today that general manager Neal Huntington and manager John Russell had their contracts extended through 2011 this past offseason. This information had not been made public previously.
The Pirates recalled top prospect Pedro Alvarez immediately following tonight's game. Alvarez is expected to make his major league debut tomorrow night at PNC Park.
