Interview with Barrett Phillips

WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

The Pirates signed Phillips after he worked out for several major league teams. He was a high school star in South Carolina and I’ve seen references to him as a “mid-week starter” at Spartanburg Methodist, although he pitched only ten innings there. I don’t know why he went undrafted or why he pitched so sparingly in his first year of JC ball. Newspaper articles referred to him as increasing his fastball velocity from the upper-80s to 92 by the time of the workouts, so maybe he attracted interest by showing added velocity in summer tournaments. Phillips himself describes his repertoire as a fastball that he throws at 86-91, a change and a curve, the latter both in the 70s.

2010: Was GCL Pirates’ best reliever, putting up solid numbers across the board. Held left-handed batters to .176 average, although sample size is extremely small.

State College seems the most likely destination for Phillips next year, but he could see time at West Virginia at some point. The Pirates will probably be looking to increase his innings gradually, so he should pitch longer outings than the 2-3 innings he generally threw in 2010.
