WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES
Baseball America rated Klinger the 38th best prospect in Arizona. His fastball supposedly reaches 94, although it was 88-90 in spring training in 2009, and BA referred to him as “projectable.” That’s pretty much a stock characterization for any pitcher who is 6’4″ or above. The idea seems to be that the pitcher will gain velocity as he fills out, but at least where Pirate prospects are concerned it never happens, and I literally mean “never.” Klinger was an Oral Roberts recruit and his prospective college coach seemed to agree with BA that he could get better. Glendale doesn’t play in a big hitting environment; of their top pitchers, Klinger was the weakest in 2008, although he had the best K rate. The Pirates signed him about five weeks after the draft.

2008: Went to GCL and dominated, then made brief appearance at State College. Got fitting introduction to hapless Spikes in last outing of season when he allowed four unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning despite allowing just one hit and one walk.

2009: Again spent bulk of his time in GCL, where he pitched very well.

2010: Still was only throwing in upper-80s in training camp and was not on any roster at start of season. Ended up having shoulder surgery and missing the season.

Klinger was back in minor league camp in March 2011.  Hopefully, he’ll finally be healthy enough to pitch.
