SCOUTING REPORT
At one point in time, Bixler was the best shortstop prospect the Pirates had, and was considered to be the shortstop of the future, to take over for Jack Wilson.  Those plans changed when Bixler struggled in every call up to the majors that he saw.  In 152 career at-bats, Bixler struck out 62 times, with a .178/.238/.237 line to go with that.  His numbers at AAA haven’t been much better, with a .782 OPS in 2009 being his best season.  Bixler also struggled on defense at shortstop.

Before the 2010 season, the Pirates traded Bixler to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for Jesus Brito.  Bixler was removed from the 40-man roster by Cleveland, and eventually traded back to the Pirates.  Bixler will be used as minor league depth for the Pirates this year, although he becomes eligible for minor league free agency at the end of the season, so it’s likely that he won’t be with the team for long this time around.
