WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
The Pirates as a rule don’t give large bonuses to international pitchers, not since they signed Luis Heredia. Torres got the largest bonus of any pitcher in their 2017-18 signing class. He sits at 90 mph, and also throws a sinker, change and curve. From the start as a pro he showed good command for a 17-year-old.
2018 The Pirates used Torres as a starter and in long relief. In the end, he got in a good innings total and showed good command, without missing many bats. He had no meaningful platoon split. 2019 Torres made three starts and 11 relief appearances in the GCL. His control was good, but he got hit extremely hard. Opponents batted .315 and slugged .564 against him in a league where the averages were .238 and .345. Torres stuff didn’t seem to play well in the GCL. He’ll only be 19 throughout the 2020 season and could get a shot at Bristol. |
