WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
The Pirates signed Canache while he was playing in a Venezuelan prospect league at age 17. One ranking listed him as the tenth best prospect in the country among players eligible to sign during the 2017-18 period. He batted 290/446/409 in the prospect league. He evidently impressed the Pirates in extended spring training, as he’ll go to the Gulf Coast League instead of the Dominican Summer League.
2019 Canache struggled in the GCL, although some allowance has to be made for the fact that he was skipping the DSL. He got only sporadic playing time due to the overloaded outfield, which probably didn’t help. He split his time between center and the corners, but also started half a dozen games at first and two at second. As with so many of the hitters who struggled in the GCL, the Pirates will have to decide whether to move Canache up to Bristol. They’ll also have to find playing time for him. |
