WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Lyles had a breakout year in his junior season, but didn’t repeat it the following year. As a fifth-year senior, he played at age 23. He doesn’t seem to be a strong defensive player.
2010 Split time between third and DH, although Kelson Brown ended up playing more at third, probably because he was better defensively. Apart from Matt Curry, Lyles was the closest thing Spikes had to a power hitter, which isn’t saying much. He got off to strong start, posting an OPS of .899 in thirteen June games, but his OPS was only .644 in July before he rebounded to .746 in August. This was the pattern generally with State College, as their hitting dropped off dramatically once other teams’ college draftees started showing up. Lyles’ plate discipline was good. 2011 Lyles started the season in extended spring training and joined West Virginia only in mid-June. He continued to show solid strike zone judgment, but didn’t hit a great deal. He did have by far his best month in August, with an OPS of .774. He played about half the time at first, splitting the rest of his time between third and DH. Lyles appears to have settled in very quickly as an organizational player. He’ll probably open 2012 with one of the class A affiliates. |
