WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Colonel is a corner utility player who’s shown the ability to hit for average, with solid plate discipline and gap power, but who lacks the HR power that teams generally want in their corner players. He’s played third more than any other position, but he’s also spent time at first and the outfield corners, and a little at second. He’s served as an emergency catcher as well. He has decent defensive ability and fair speed. The Pirates signed him to a minor league deal for 2011.

2003-04: Put up only middling hitting numbers in low minors.

2005-08: Had apparent breakout season in high A in 2005, posted only fair numbers in AA the next year, then followed with strong season while repeating the level in 2007. Had similar strong season in 2008. Should be remembered, though, that Colonel played in hitters’ environments in 2007-08.

2009: Named Rockies’ 28th best prospect by Baseball America prior to season, but regressed significantly from 2008, with power especially tailing off. Became free agent after season.

2010: Drifted through three organizations, then moved on briefly to independent ball. Hitting continued to regress.

Colonel’s most likely destination is Altoona, as Indianapolis will be overloaded with infielders. Hopefully, he can regain some of the form he showed in 2007-08.
