WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Beam is the third right-hander the Pirates have taken out of Dallas Baptist in the last few years, following unsigned 2012 27th pick Jake Johansen (drafted in the second round and signed by the Nationals in 2013), and 2009 first round compensation pick Vic Black.  Beam started his career with Des Moines Area CC before moving to DBU in 2013.  Beam has a three pitch mix, highlighted by a 94 MPH fastball.  The fastball is ahead of his slider and changeup, with the other two getting hit hard at times.  Beam was the 57th best prospect in Texas this year, according to Baseball America, with the top 52 players appearing in BA’s top 500.
