WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

The Pirates drafted Smith as a college senior.  He pitched in relief all four years and had a 5.59 ERA in 29 innings in 2018, with a 44:16 K:BB ratio.  That was unlike his previous two years, when he had ERAs of 1.77 and 1.61, along with low walk rates.  He signed two weeks after the draft.

2018
A-:  2-0-1, 3.90 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 27.2 IP, 2.3 BB/9, 9.8 K/9

The Pirates sent Smith to West Virginia, where he pitched in relief.  He got off to a bad start, with nine earned runs and 17 hits allowed in his first 12.2 IP.  Over his last 15 IP, he allowed just three earned runs and ten hits, while fanning 21.  His platoon split was very small.

2019
A-:  0-0-1, 2.25 ERA, 0.50 WHIP, 4.0 IP, 2.3 BB/9, 11.3 K/9
A:  2-1-2, 2.84 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 31.2 IP, 2.3 BB/9, 11.4 K/9

The Pirates sent Smith back to West Virginia when the short season teams started play, but after two games moved him up to Greensboro.  He pitched well there, typically in two-inning outings.  He had very good walk and K rates and was tough on right-handed batters, holding them to a 180/215/348 ine.

Smith has done very well so far.  As with most low-level relievers, the big question will be whether he remains effective as he moves up.
