The Mets sent Holderman to the Appalachian League, where he pitched strictly in relief.  He had a solid ERA, but didn’t pitch that well, with poor walk and K rates.

Holderman started the season in the low A rotation and fanned 11 over six scoreless innings after his first start.  His third and fourth starts went badly, though, and he went on the injured list until late July.  He eventually made three more starts in low A.

Holderman returned in May, in the rotation at low A.  He missed about six weeks starting in mid-June, then later returned to low A for five more starts.  He pitched just decently, with low K rates.

Holderman opened the season in AA, started twice, then missed two months.  He rehabbed in Low A, then returned to AA for the last month.  Beyond the first two gams he pitched strictly in relief.  When Holderman was able to pitch, he posted good walk and K rates.

The Mets sent Holderman to AAA, where he pitched strictly in relief.  He did very well there and the Mets called him up in mid-May.  Other than missing much of June with a right shoulder impingement, Holderman stayed in the Mets’ bullpen.  He continued to pitch well, allowing an OPS of just .466 to right-handed batters and .525 to left-handed batters.  The Pirates acquired him just after the All-Star break for Daniel Vogelbach.  The team initially sent Holderman to Indianapolis, but called him up after a week.  Over nine games with the Pirates he pitched poorly, but nearly all the damage came in the last two games.  After that, Holderman went on the injured list with shoulder soreness and missed the rest of the season.

After relying almost entirely on the waiver wire to stock the bullpen, Ben Cherington made a significant departure with Holderman in two regards:  He wasn’t a waiver claim and he profiles as a late-inning reliever.  Possibly the biggest question is whether he can stay healthy.  He has three options and nearly all his major league control left.
