WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

The Pirates acquired Hamman in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft after the 2007 season. He appeared to have settled in as an upper-level swing man for the Tigers, relying mainly on offspeed stuff, and his K rate took a nose dive when he began starting games.

2006-07: Reached AAA and decent year there in AAA in 2006, but struggled in 2007 and got bombed late the season after demotion to AA.

2008: Opened in Altoona rotation, pitched well, then moved up to AAA for last two months. Wasn’t as effective there. Surprisingly, had strong reverse platoon split in AAA. Had previously been much more effective against LH batters. Became minor league free agent after the season, but re-signed with Pirates.

2009: Split time between Altoona and Indianapolis bullpens, leading system in appearances. Pitched well with the former and poorly with the latter, although peripherals weren’t quite as bad as ERA. Re-signed again after the season for 2010.

2010: Pirates released Hamman at end of spring training, but a few days into the season he appeared in a box score pitching for Indianapolis (and walking the only batter he faced). It turned out Pirates immediately re-signed him. Again split time between AAA and AA during the year, primarily the former. Pitched fairly well this time in AAA but couldn’t get anybody out in AA. LH batters hit only .167 against him while he was with Indy.

The Pirates could bring Hamman back for another season, although at this point he’s clearly just an organizational player.
