WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Mejia signed at a late age shortly before the 2019 season started. He throws 93-95 mph with a good curve.
2019 Pitching in relief, Mejia dominated the DSL, to put it mildly. He didn’t allow a single extra-base hit, with opponents batting just 137/213/137, and he struck out just under half the batters he faced. 2020 The Pirates brought Mejia to fall instructionals in 2019, so he would have been in the US in 2020 had there been a season. 2021 Mejia was the closest thing Bradenton had to a closer until early August, when the Pirates moved him up to Greensboro. The ERAs are a bit misleading; Mejia was charged with only two earned runs all year, but he allowed four unearned runs with Bradenton and five with Greensboro. For the full season, opponents batted only .173 against him, but he walked a lot of batters. His stuff never seemed overwhelming and he fell behind a lot, but he didn’t give in and that approach seemed to work for him. 2022 Mejia struggled to adjust to AA ball. It’s possible the hitters chased less often enough that eventually he had to groove too many pitches. He never got on a good stretch and had more trouble in the second half than the first. Mejia had a huge home/road split holding batters to a .583 OPS at home but getting torched for a 1.007 OPS on the road. He also had a huge platoon split. Mejia may have hit a wall in AA. He’ll probably get a chance to show otherwise in 2023. |
