| Ortiz signed at age 19, shortly before spring training in 2018. He had interest from other teams, which isn’t surprising given that he’s a tall lefty and has good velocity, sitting at 92-93 around the time he signed. He’s since reached the mid-90s, and he also throws a curve and change. It’s unknown what bonus he received from the Pirates, but it was probably somewhere in the $200-300,000 range.
2018 Ortiz pitched in the rotation, putting up weak numbers apart from a solid K rate. Opponents batted .280 against him. He pitched well in July, but not at the beginning or end of the season. 2019 Ortiz pitched mostly as a starter in the GCL. He did reasonably well except for the obvious problem of walks. He seemed to make progress in August, walking eight and striking out 17 in 16.1 IP. In June and July he walked 13 and struck out ten in 11 IP. Ortiz finished the 2019 season in encouraging fashion. He could go to Bristol or West Virginia in 2020. |
