WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

The Pirates purchased Piechota’s contract from the Utica Unicorns of the United Shore Professional Baseball League.  Piechota had just recently signed with Utica after playing at Madonna in 2016.  He led the team in innings pitched, going 7-4, 2.66 in 13 starts.  Piechota held opponents to a .215 average while walking 16 and striking out 78 in 91.1 IP.  His fastball sits at only 86-88.  His best pitch is a slider and he also throws a change.  Piechota’s best attribute is that he throws strikes.

2016
R:  1-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, 6.2 IP, 0.0 BB/9, 6.8 K/9
R+:  0-1-1, 4.66 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 9.2 IP, 0.9 BB/9, 8.4 K/9
A-:  2-0-0, 1.93 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 9.1 IP, 2.9 BB/9, 4.8 K/9

Piechota filled in with all three short season teams, pitching solely in relief.  Overall, he did reasonably well, mostly throwing strikes.

2017
R+:  1-2-1, 2.95 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 58.0 IP, 0.9 BB/9, 7.9 K/9
A-:  0-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP, 1.0 IP, 0.0 BB/9, 0.0 K/9

Piechota opened the season at Morgantown, making one appearance, but moved to Bristol once the draftees reported to Morgantown.  He served in a swing role, giving the team innings as needed.  He did well, walking very few hitters, which helped him hold opponents to a .287 OBP.

2018
A:  2-2-2, 3.38 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 45.1 IP, 1.2 BB/9, 9.7 K/9
A+:  0-5-1, 5.28 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 58.0 IP, 2.3 BB/9, 5.1 K/9

Piechota opened the season at West Virginia and moved up to Bradenton in early June.  At both stops, he served in every conceivable role, from closer to starter.  He pitched very well in low A, but had a lot more trouble higher up.  Even there, he had his moments, including three late-season starts in which he went seven innings each time and allowed four runs total.  Overall, though, Florida State League batters hit .310 against him, with ten home runs.

Piechota has been very helpful to the Pirates given his ability to handle so many pitching roles.  If he pitches better at Bradenton, he could see some time at Altoona in 2019.
