WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Brito was one of the Pirates’ more prominent international signings in 2014.  He’s a small catcher with a good arm and a line drive bat.

2015
DSL:  306/415/429, 98 AB, 7 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 16 BB, 20 K, 0-1 SB

Brito missed part of his first season with a hand injury.  He hit very well when he played, with good plate discipline.  He threw out 29% of base stealers.

2016
DSL:  256/383/333, 78 AB, 6 2B, 13 BB, 12 K, 2-2 SB
R:  167/286/250, 12 AB, 1 2B, 2 BB, 2 K

Maybe due to the missed time, the Pirates sent Brito back to the DSL, where he was slated to share catching duties with Samuel Inoa.  He ended up missing time due to injury again and didn’t hit as well as the previous year.  He did, however, improve his already-good plate discipline.  The Pirates promoted Brito to the GCL in mid-August.  Promotions from the DSL during the season are unusual, but Raul Hernandez was moved up from the GCL as part of the fallout from the trade of Reese McGuire, and Mikell Granberry got hurt.  Brito got into four games in the GCL, three behind the plate.  He threw out three of eight base stealers.

2017
R:  259/331/348, 112 AB, 6 2B, 2 3B, 9 BB, 28 K, 0-1 SB

Returning to the GCL, Brito shared the catching job with Manny Bejerano.  He held his own at the plate, although he struck out a lot for a guy with only modest gap power.  He had some issues behind the plate and threw out 23% of base stealers.

2018
R+:  239/357/265, 113 AB, 3 2B, 22 BB, 27 K, 0-1 SB

Brito was the primary catcher at Bristol until Zac Susi moved there from Morgantown.  Brito just held his own at the plate, other than drawing a lot of walks.  He didn’t hit for any power at all.  He threw out 41% of base stealers.

Brito left camp in spring 2019 and was placed on the restricted list.  It’s unknown whether he’ll return to the Pirates.
