WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

At 19, Nivar was older than most Latin prospects when the Pirates signed him.  His age probably played a role in them bringing him to spring training in 2010 after such a poor season in the DSL.  He’s tall and thin, and they were probably hoping he’d hit for power if he filled out.  He runs well and is a good defensive outfielder.

2009
DSL:  224/243/311, 254 AB, 9 2B, 5 3B, 1 HR, 4 BB, 42 K, 11-20 SB

Struggled in first pro season, showing a little power while drawing virtually no walks.  He played center exclusively.

2010
R:  308/438/308, 13 AB, 2 BB, 2 K, 0-1 SB

Made the GCL roster but didn’t play until the very end of the season, getting only 13 ABs.  He probably was hurt.

2011
R:  247/302/289, 97 AB, 2 2B, 1 3B, 7 BB, 14 K, 3-8 SB

Returned to GCL at age 21 and didn’t hit much, although he did show much improved plate discipline.  He played in a little more than half the teams’ games, as he clearly ranked below Willy Garcia, Gregory Polanco and Jose Ozuna on the depth chart.  He split his time mainly between center and left.

2012
R:  294/314/471, 34 AB, 4 2B, 1 3B, 1 BB, 7 K, 2-4 SB
A-:  000/000/000, 2 AB, 1 K

Nivar went back to the GCL, where he hit well in a small amount of playing time.  He moved up to State College for one game in July, but got hurt and missed the rest of the year.

Nivar obviously wasn’t going anywhere as an outfielder and the Pirates now have a lot of outfielders at the lower levels.  He was listed as a pitcher on the fall instructional league roster, so it looks like he’ll get a last chance on the mound.
