WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Alvarez was a utility player in his time in the Orioles’ system, playing second, third, short and a little in the outfield. He seemed to be making some progress with the bat in 2005, but his hitting collapsed in 2006-07, and didn’t bounce back during his one season in independent ball. He generally showed decent to good plate discipline, but never more than modest power. After the 2008 season Alvarez retired to coach in indy ball. The Pirates signed him to a minor league deal for 2011. He may be slated to coach rather than play, but was listed as a player the way Josh Bonifay is every year due to some technicality in the rules. If he does play, Alvarez will probably fill in as a utility player at Bradenton or Altoona. |
