WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Lodge signed with the Pirates in late 2010, after pitching well at MLB’s Australian academy.  He went 2-3, 2.03 in 40 IP, with 3 walks and 22 Ks.  He struggled in brief action in the Australia Baseball League afterward.  Lodge doesn’t throw very hard at this stage, only in the mid-80s in training camp in March 2013, but he didn’t turn 18 until October 2011.

2011
R:  0-2-0, 6.75 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 29.1 IP, 0.9 BB/9, 5.5 K/9

Spent the season in the GCL bullpen.  He walked very few, but didn’t strike out many, either.  Opponents hit .289 against him.  His WHIP wasn’t bad at all, so the high ERA probably had a large element of bad luck.

2012
R:  1-2-2, 3.08 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 38.0 IP, 0.7 BB/9, 5.2 K/9

Lodge returned to the GCL and pitched mainly in relief, showing solid improvement except for his K rate.  He pitched the entire season at 18.

2013
A-:  4-5-0, 5.18 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 57.1 IP, 1.1 BB/9, 4.7 K/9

Lodge opened the season in the Jamestown rotation and spent most of the season there before moving to the bullpen.  He had some success early, posting an ERA of 3.00 in July, but he got hit increasingly hard late in the season.  Gopher balls were part of the problem, as he allowed nine.  He was something of a flyball pitcher and right-handed hitters batted .301 against him.  He walked very few but also had an extremely low K rate.

Lodge’s stuff didn’t hold up well to the New York-Penn League.  He could move to the bullpen at Jamestown in 2014, although he wasn’t on any roster at the start of the season, possibly due to injury.  He’ll spend the season at age 20.
