WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Rider was a four-year starter at Kent State and is the school’s all-time leader in hits.  He came back from a down junior year to have very strong senior season.  He appears to have some gap power but apparently not great speed.  Rider played short at Kent State but the Pirates announced him as a second baseman.  That may be attributable to his size.  He’s never previously been drafted.  He signed shortly after the college world series.

2012
R:  239/337/310, 71 AB, 5 2B, 9 BB, 13 K, 2-3 SB
A-:  119/235/136, 59 AB, 1 2B, 8 BB, 12 K, 3-3 SB

Rider started off in the GCL and played mainly short.  He moved up to State College in August and divided his time mainly between second and third.  He hit just decently in the GCL and not at all with the Spikes, although his plate discipline was good at both levels.

2013
A-:  246/288/295, 61 AB, 3 2B, 2 BB, 11 K, 3-4 SB
A:  302/367/535, 43 AB, 4 2B, 2 HR, 4 BB, 6 K

Rider opened the season as a backup with Jamestown.  Except for a brief stretch in mid-July, when he moved up to West Virginia, he stayed at Jamestown until he joined the Power for good in mid-August.  He didn’t hit much for the Jammers, but got hot when he joined the Power in August and was their best hitter in the last two weeks of the season.  Of course, it’s a small sample size in both cases.  Rider played mostly third for both teams, with a few games at second and first.

Rider hopefully made some real progress late in the 2013 season.  He’ll probably return to West Virginia in 2014.
