WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Harvey was a prospect as both a hitter and pitcher.  On the mound, he showed a fastball that reached 96-97 and a power slider, but he didn’t get the results in college that his stuff suggested he would as his command wasn’t good.  As a hitter his primary attribute was power.  Most teams probably regarded him as a better prospect as a pitcher, but the Marlins took him as a hitter.  He initially split his time between third and right, but moved to the outfield after a year.  He showed solid power but struggled with the strike zone, and his hitting fell off every year.  During the 2008 season, the Marlins moved him to the mound.  He’s done well at the high A level, but has yet to have any success in a couple tries at AA.  He throws more in the low 90s now.  The Pirates signed him to a minor league deal at the beginning of spring training.

2005
A-:  300/320/479, 263 AB, 14 2B, 3 3B, 9 HR, 9 BB, 60 K, 4-4 SB

Harvey debuted in short season ball, splitting his time between third and right.  He hit well, showing good power, but the walk and K numbers were bad.

2006
A:  245/291/428, 367 AB, 18 2B, 2 3B, 15 HR, 24 BB, 82 K, 9-13 SB

In full season ball, Harvey moved to right full time.  He continued to hit for solid power, but he fell off everywhere else as he continued to struggle with the strike zone.

2007
A+:  238/301/376, 420 AB, 16 2B, 3 3B, 12 HR, 34 BB, 100 K, 6-9 SB

In high A, Harvey had about the same season as the year before, with less power.

2008
AA:  148/228/287, 209 AB, 9 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR, 21 BB, 71 K, 1-1 SB
R:  1-0-0, 6.23 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 4.1 IP, 6.2 BB/9, 10.4 K/9

A:  0-2-0, 7.50 ERA, 2.83 WHIP, 6.0 IP, 10.5 BB/9, 3.0 K/9

Harvey opened the season playing the outfield in AA and was overmatched at the plate.  The Marlins converted him to the mound and he got into eight games in the low minors, struggling to throw strikes.

2009
A+:  6-7-1, 4.38 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 72.0 IP, 4.2 BB/9, 6.8 K/9

Pitching mostly in relief, Harvey made some progress with his command in high A.  It was evidently enough to persuade the Marlins to add him to the 40-man roster.

2010
A+:  1-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, 7.0 IP, 1.3 BB/9, 7.7 K/9
AA:  1-0-3, 5.40 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 31.2 IP, 4.5 BB/9, 7.1 K/9

After missing the first couple months with a knee injury, Harvey went to high A and pitched well in relief, then moved up to AA, where he didn’t pitch as well.  His main problem in AA was poor control.  The Marlins designated him for assignment in late July.

2011
A+:  3-2-0, 2.27 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 31.2 IP, 3.4 BB/9, 8.8 K/9
AA:  2-3-0, 6.68 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, 32.1 IP, 4.2 BB/9, 6.4 K/9

Harvey split the season between high A and AA.  He pitched well at the lower level, with a decent walk rate and a good K rate.  In AA he was much less successful, struggling with both walks and HRs (1.7 per nine innings).  He became a free agent after the season.

2012
AA:  0-3-2, 3.29 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 54.2 IP, 4.4 BB/9, 7.4 K/9

Harvey spent the season in the Altoona bullpen.  He had a solid but not outstanding season.  His control was shaky and he had trouble with left-handed hitters, who batted .267 against him with all four of the HRs he allowed.  He had a 1.47 ERA in the second half, but had the same number of walks as strikeouts.

Harvey will become a free agent again in the fall and likely will move on.
