WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Despite very good results, the Pirates left Cadet in the Dominican Summer League for three years.  He throws around 86-88 with a lot of movement on his fastball.  His best pitch is a curve, but his command is shaky.

2009
DSL:  6-1-0, 3.13 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 63.1 IP, 2.3 BB/9, 8.7 K/9

Cadet had a good debut pitching in relief in the DSL, with excellent numbers across the board.  That included a very low walk rate for an inexperienced pitcher.

2010
DSL:  3-3-0, 2.31 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 70.0 IP, 2.7 BB/9, 6.0 K/9

Cadet moved to the rotation and put up similar numbers, except for a much-reduced K rate.

2011

DSL:  2-2-0, 1.22 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 37.0 IP, 5.6 BB/9, 10.5 K/9

Back in the DSL for a third season, Cadet pitched mostly as a starter but only in short stints.  His K rate was very high, but so was his walk rate.

2012
R:  3-2-1, 2.89 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 28.0 IP, 3.5 BB/9, 10.0 K/9

Cadet spent 2012 in the GCL at age 21, pitching in relief.  He struck out a lot of batters and improved his control.

Cadet pitched well enough to move up at least to the New York-Penn League.  Considering his age, the Pirates may want to try him at West Virginia at some point.
