WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Flynn was a reliever his first two years with Arizona, but made the move to the rotation his junior year as the Saturday starter.  The stats weren’t good, with a 4.89 ERA in 73.2 innings, along with a 72:29 K:BB ratio.  He is, however, more highly regarded than his numbers would suggest, as MLB.com had him ranked 188th in the draft class and Baseball America 193rd.

Flynn has a fastball that sits 90-94 MPH, touching 95, along with good movement.  He also throws a curve in the 79-82 MPH range, a mid-80s slider that is like a cutter, and a mid-80s changeup.  He can throw all of his pitches for strikes, and all four can be average or better, although the fastball is the only one right now that could be close to a plus pitch.  The changeup was his best secondary pitch as a junior, but BA noted that he saw improvements once he added separation in his velocity between the slider and curveball.  He did have some elbow soreness in the fall, but was able to pitch in the spring.  Flynn has the chance to be a back of the rotation starter in the majors.  He signed quickly for $25,600 below the slot amount.

2018
A-:  0-3-0, 5.94 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 16.2 IP, 2.2 BB/9, 9.2 K/9

Flynn went to Morgantown where he was slated to be a member of the rotation.  He had trouble staying in action, having starts scratched a couple times and getting shut down for good in late July.  That was due both to back tightness and a desire to limit his innings.  Except for a bad debut start, he pitched well, better than the ERA indicates.

2019
R:  0-0-0, 2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 4.0 IP, 0.0 BB/9, 9.00 K/9
A-:  0-0-0, 108.00 ERA, 12.00 WHIP, 0.1 IP, 81.0 BB/9, 0.0 K/9

Flynn suffered a sprained UCL during spring 2019.  He had PRP injections and returned late in the season to make three rehab appearances in the GCL and one rough one for West Virginia.

Hopefully Flynn will be ready to pitch in full season ball in 2020.
