WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Gretler was drafted out of high school — also in the 39th round — by the Boston Red Sox. He didn’t sign, and went to Oregon State where he has put up some decent numbers the last two years, although without much power. This year he hit for a .300/.358/.448 line in 203 at-bats, more than doubling his playing time total from the previous two years combined. The Pirates announced him as a third baseman, but he has caught in college. He was a backup at third base his first two years, and had a rough transition to the spot in 2015, but has improved since then and was a regular at the spot this year. He’s a college junior, so he could decide to return to college for his senior year. He looks like a backup plan for the Pirates if some of their earlier round infielders don’t sign.
