WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Mikolas progressed quickly once the Padres moved him to relief in his first full year. His fastball sits at 93-94 and can reach 98, but doesn’t have great movement. His best pitch is a curve that he’s thrown about a third of the time as a major leaguer, an extremely high percentage for a RHP. He rarely throws a change. Despite that, he hasn’t had a significant platoon split in the minors and has had a reverse platoon split in the majors, although the latter has come in a small sample size. He’s mostly been a groundball pitcher and doesn’t miss a lot of bats. The Padres designated Mikolas and Jaff Decker for assignment to create roster space, and the Pirates acquired them for Alex Dickerson.
2009 Mikolas got hit hard in his debut, most of it as a starter. 2010 The Padres moved Mikolas to the bullpen in low A and his performance improved significantly. 2011 Mikolas dominated in high A, all the more impressively because he was in the high-octane California League. The K rate turned out to be the highest of his pro career. He continued to pitch well after a mid-season promotion to AA. After the season, Baseball America rated him the Padres’ 16th best prospect. 2012 The Padres sent Mikolas back to AA to open the season and he didn’t pitch well there, despite the good ERA. He was called up to the majors for a month starting in early May, then went down to AAA. The Padres called him up again briefly in July, then for good in mid-August. His control wasn’t as good as before, both in AAA and in the majors. 2013 Other than two games in July, Mikolas spent the season as the closer in AAA. He didn’t walk many, but he had more hits allowed than innings pitched and his K rate was very low. Mikolas profiles as a middle reliever, as he hasn’t shown the kind of dominance to be a late-inning reliever. He’ll probably compete for a bullpen spot with Vin Mazzaro and Jeanmar Gomez, or he could give them the option to trade one of those two. He has an option left, so he gives them some flexibility. |
