WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Irving was a three-year starter at UVa.  He didn’t hit much and showed no power, but he did draw a lot of walks, more than he had strikeouts.  Baseball America characterized him as a good receiver with an accurate, average-strength arm, but he’s thrown out only three of 21 base stealers as a pro.  Arizona released him after very limited action over two seasons and the Pirates signed him to a minor league contract.

2014
A-:  190/357/238, 21 AB, 1 2B, 4 BB, 8 K, 1-1 SB

Irving saw only brief action in short season ball.

2015
A-:  276/378/316, 76 AB, 3 2B, 11 BB, 10 K, 1-3 SB

The D’backs sent Irving back to short season ball, where he served as a backup.  He showed good plate discipline and little power.

Irving will likely provide catching depth at the lower levels of the system.
