WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Gomez signed late for a Dominican prospect, then pitched well in the low minors.  He had low K rates, though, and got hit hard once he got past low A.  Tampa Bay released him after the 2014 season and he missed two years due to Tommy John surgery.  Up until that point, he’d pitched mainly as a starter and threw in the low-90s.  By the time the Giants signed him for the 2017 season, he was throwing 95-96, reaching 98.  He also throws a slider, curve and change.  He’s a mild groundball pitcher and hasn’t had trouble with gopher balls.  Since the surgery, he’s shown more ability to miss bats, but still has had trouble putting hitters away at times.  He reached the majors with the Giants in 2017-18, but missed much of the latter season with an injury.  The Pirates signed him to a minor league deal for 2019.

2010
DSL:  4-0-0, 1.85 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 39.0 IP, 2.1 BB/9, 6.5 K/9

Gomez had a good debut, making eight starts in the DSL.  He showed good control but didn’t miss a lot of bats.

2011
DSL:  2-1-0, 4.26 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 12.2 IP, 2.8 BB/9, 8.5 K/9
R:  3-4-0, 2.48 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 54.1 IP, 1.5 BB/9, 7.0 K/9
A-:  1-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, 7.0 IP, 3.9 BB/9, 5.1 K/9

The Rays started Gomez off in the DSL, but moved him up to the GCL for its season.  He continued to pitch mainly as a starter and got very good results.  He made one start and one relief appearance in the New York-Penn League at the end of the season.

2012
A:  9-3-0, 2.48 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 120.0 IP, 3.2 BB/9, 5.9 K/9

Gomez spent the season mainly as a starter in low A.  He again got good results, but didn’t strike out many hitters.  He was very tough on left-handed hitters, holding them to a .573 OPS, compared to .683 by right-handed hitters.

2013
A+:  5-8-0, 4.69 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 111.1 IP, 3.2 BB/9, 5.3 K/9

In high A, Gomez had more trouble, getting hit harder and still missing very few bats.  He was out for the month of August.

2014
R:  0-2-0, 7.04 ERA, 2.09 WHIP, 7.2 IP, 7.0 BB/9, 10.6 K/9
A+:  1-2-0, 4.50 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 40.0 IP, 3.4 BB/9, 4.3 K/9
AA:  2-4-0, 5.97 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 37.2 IP, 1.4 BB/9, 5.0 K/9

Gomez opened the season back in high A and didn’t pitch well there, but the Rays promoted him to AA in May.  He struggled there as well and, in late June, either got hurt and was sent back to extended spring training.  He made three late-season appearances in the GCL and the Rays released him after the season.  At some point he had Tommy John surgery.

2015-16
DNP

Gomez didn’t appear in organized ball in either season as he recovered from the surgery.

2017
AAA:  3-9-0, 4.07 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 97.1 IP, 3.5 BB/9, 8.2 K/9
MLB:  0-0-0, 8.44 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 5.1 IP, 1.7 BB/9, 10.1 K/9

The Giants signed Gomez to a minor league contract for 2017 and sent him to AAA.  He opened the season pitching in relief, but after May he mostly pitched as a starter.  He struggled through June, which isn’t too surprising given the long layoff.  Through the first three months, his ERA was 6.54.  In July and August it was 2.17.  He had a strong platoon split.  On the season Gomez showed much more ability to miss bats than he had in the past.  The Giants called him up in September and he made four relief appearances.

2018
R:  0-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, 5.0 IP, 1.8 BB/9, 9.0 K/9
AAA:  1-3-2, 5.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, 18.0 IP, 3.5 BB/9, 6.5 K/9
MLB:  1-0-0, 7.71 ERA, 2.25 WHIP, 9.1 IP, 1.0 BB/9, 7.7 K/9

Gomez had a good spring and made the Giants’ roster to start the season.  The team sent him to AAA after three games, then recalled him, then sent him back down at the end of April.  He was placed on the minor league disabled list with an unknown injury, then released and re-signed to a minor league deal in early July.  He finally returned about a week later, pitching first in rookie ball and then moving back to AAA.  He got hit very hard in his major league time, although it was only five games.  Gomez became a free agent after the season.

Gomez will no doubt open 2019 with Indianapolis, where he could serve as either a starter or reliever.
