WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Baseball America chose Jones as the #3 prospect in the New York Collegiate League in the summer of 2009, following his strong season at the University of New Orleans.  He’s athletic with good speed, and was a football standout.  His hitting fell off in 2010 and he transferred to Southern University.  He was on the team’s roster but didn’t play due to ineligibility.  He’s obviously very toolsy, but also obviously has some significant holes in his swing.  He signed in early August and figures to be a project.

2011
R:  500/625/1167, 12 AB, 1 3B, 2 HR, 4 BB, 2 K
A-:  245/375/340, 53 AB, 5 2B, 8 BB, 11 K, 0-2 SB

The Pirates sent Jones to the GCL for a few games and he was obviously overqualified, going 6-for-12 with a triple and two HRs.  He moved up to State College and played regularly the last two and a half weeks.  He generally batted in the middle of the order, so the Pirates are apparently at least hopeful he’ll be a power bat.  He hit respectably bad considering that he hadn’t played college ball all year.  He played exclusively in left.

Jones is an unknown quantity at this point, although he clearly has some potential.  It’s a little surprising, though, that he opened 2012 in extended spring training rather than West Virginia.  The Pirates elected to go with a very young, high-ceiling outfield in low A, with Gregory Polanco, Willy Garcia and Josh Bell, and kept their 2011 college draftees–Jones, Taylor Lewis and Alex Fuselier–in training camp at the start of the season.  Jones thus will return to State College.
